WBB: Stanford 62 Colorado 54 -
81alum - 02-04-2021
Preview:
Well now they come here and lose the elevation advantage, but arrive with the confidence they can beat us. Since we lost to them, however, their sensational sophomore guard Jaylyn Sherrod has had surgery and is out for the season. Hollingshed, who pretty much single handedly beat us in Colorado, had a good game against ASU and had another outpouring of 22 points in her last outing against Oregon State. Nobody seems to be able to slow her down. However, Colorado lost both games. (Their other two were postponed.)
In their last game, Colorado only played 6 players for double digit minutes, so their depth has shrunk. Frida Formann, the sharpshooting freshman Danish guard, continues to score well and in fact Colorado had 4 players in double digits in their loss to Oregon State. To beat Colorado, we have to hold Hollingshed to some reasonable level of scoring without letting everyone else get double digits. But given how well JR Payne has disrupted our offense in the past, I would suspect the real key to the game is getting past the Colorado defense and putting points on the board. Colorado's offense is good enough to win but we ought to be able to hold it within reason on our second try, but the real danger is if JRP prevents our offense from ever getting into a groove. I'm sure that our coaches have been installing plays specially made for this reason :) But who know what wrinkle JRP will introduce in the chess game. She has an uncanny sense of how to throw sand into our gears.

You are correct in that JRP seems to have Tara's number. However.... I do seem to remember that we had a brobdingnagian problem just getting the ball through the hoop in the last meeting. Hopefully, being back home AND wanting revenge will give the offense everything it needs to bury them this time.

Oregon State has had to cancel their game vs Arizona tomorrow

We've gotta beat these Buffalo girls. Coat 'em with some Maples sugar and barbecue 'em.

Colorado did a good job of disrupting the offense by pressing the guards and denying entry into the elbow. They were very aggressive about getting out into the perimeter passing lanes and their defense was 'high,' i.e. they had a lot more bodies closer to the top half of the key than at the bottom. UCLA has had some success against us with this approach as well. Brink is playing much better basketball now which is a plus. She and Belibi ought to be looking for passes over the top. Taking away the elbow and the perimeter passing lanes means that there are other options available. We didn't do a particularly great job of adjusting, but Coach Tara has probably watched the video 300 times so I'm betting there will be adjustments.
Colorado, like UCLA, also is very physical, with a lot of hip checking and disrupting players who are trying to run motion through the key. We could do a better job of selling the fouling and setting some rock solid picks. Elevator, anyone?

I predict Stanford wins by at least 25 points. It will be a completely different game than last time.

I could see that happening, and were it not for the woofing gods I might have been inclined to make a similar prediction. Our team might improve considerably on account of finally being home and able to practice effectively. Colorado might lose an edge in the absence of Sherrod, their general thinness of rotation, and giving up their elevation advantage. Our team will be highly motivated and not at all inclined to overlook this team. All that points in our direction.
However, last time Colorado came to Maples it was not exactly a 25 point win, but a squeaker in which we barely got to overtime on the basis of a fabulous inbounds bullet pass from Lacie to Prechtel for the tying basket.

However, in last year's game at Maples Sherrod led the Buffs with 21 points. Colorado's fortunes this evening may hinge on how well they can replace her.
Here is the thread and my write-up from a year ago:

The rebounding problems were apparent last year too. We started that game off giving Colorado more offensive rebounds than we had defensive rebounds. Colorado wins ugly when they win--battering their way for offensive rebounds and put backs, and hoping against hope that it won't get them into foul trouble.
A tightly called game should favor us. If you see Missy, you might as well spot Colorado a half a dozen points.

not able to access the game through our usual Fubo TV - PAC-12 set-up, also not able to live stream the game online. We are local - are we blocked?

Something weird going on. Can watch online, and can switch to the men's game.
Was astounded by Cam's play toward the end, then on the floor with her final play (even if it doesn't count).

We lead 14-6 after one quarter.
Both teams endured 4+ minute stretches of scoring drought as the jump shots were off on both sides but our playmakers Haley, Kiana and Cameron were able to drive to the basket and make some clutch shots.
Another good development on our side is that Hollingshed picked up two fouls.

14-6 at the end of Q1. Nearly 16-6 but Brink's steal & layup was a little late.
Good blocks but not great offense except for a few minutes.

24-9. Welcome to Maples!
Brink with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
27-11. Got the Buffaloes on the run!
30-13. Pour it on!

I guess to one ref at 4:06 2Q, you can walk the ball to the basket if you get fouled.

37-15 at the half. Sweet.

We lead 37-15 at the half.
Defensively, Colorado is undermanned with a couple of notable injuries plus Hollingshed had to sit for long periods of the first half due to 2 fouls. She only has two points (off of free throws) and the Buffaloes are only shooting 23% from the field. Anna Wilson and Cameron Brink have been the standouts on that side of the court. Anna has 4 steals leading to conversions on the other end and Brink has 4 blocks.
Offensively, Lacie is having her best offensive game of the season going 3/3 from long range for 9 points, which is already a season high. Her previous best was 6 points three times. We are also shooting 52% from the field.
We did have 7 turnovers including a few sloppy ones, but so far we are doing what we need to do and leading a shorthanded team at home. We really need to finish the job in the second half.

If Kiana had hit that last shot, it would have been 25 point lead....
