MBB: STAN 70 WEENIES 55 - JJJ - 02-04-2021

Should move to espn2

Now on espn2

None of the 3 former starters are back again (DD, BW, ZW).

13-13 at the first commercial break.

Da Silva, Delaire, and now a suprising 6pts from Murrell giving us the 32-25 lead for now but both defenses being stingy.

RE: MBB at Cal on espn2 - JJJ - 02-04-2021

Noah Taitz with 8 including a two-handed jam! What?!

42-29 at the half as we end with 61% in FGs.

RE: MBB at Cal on espn2 - JJJ - 02-04-2021

The two teams taking turns going on scoring droughts. We’re up 8 with under 7 to go.

And in the end, we play like we should and avoid a bad loss for bracketology.
70-55

The 3 guys out are now “day to day” and we might even see one or more back for our rematch this weekend.

RE: MBB at Cal on espn2 - PVTree - 02-04-2021

Was Keefe unavailable today?

Good win considering all the unavailable players.

Safe to say if Murrell keeps playing like he did tonight, Keefe will have a hard time getting back on the court.

I didn’t hear any mention of Keefe  and couldn’t tell you if he was dressed on the bench.

RE: MBB at Cal on espn2 - BobK - 02-04-2021

Considering our two recent close loses I think this was a very good win. Fine play by Murrell and Taiz

RE: MBB at Cal on espn2 - martyup - 02-04-2021

What happened to our free throw shooting?  Tonight we were 14 for 24 (58.3%).  We almost made a higher % of FG (54%) than free throws.

Anyway, good win in Berzerkely.  Cal sucks!

RE: MBB: STAN 70 WEENIES 55 - Papa John - 02-04-2021

This may have been mentioned elsewhere, but did folks know that Trent Johnson is Deputy Analyst & Director of Player Development for Cal basketball? Cal's current coach, Mark Fox, was an assistant for TJ back in his Nevada days.

RE: MBB: STAN 70 WEENIES 55 - JJJ - 02-05-2021

I had heard Trent Johnson’s name mentioned but I wasn’t paying attention to the context. I was also not around these parts during those days, so I don’t have any institutional knowledge. Happy for the Cliff Notes if you have them, Papa John. :)

I see that the kickoff time for Super Bowl LV is 3:30PT and the Weenie game is currently slated to tip off at 7:00PT. I know where I’ll be tuning in to at 7:00.

RE: MBB: STAN 70 WEENIES 55 - Phogge - 02-05-2021

Fox is doing a great job with what he has which is Kelly and Bradley. I didn't think that they would win a game.

Keefe played 40 garbage time seconds.

When you say "our," you mean 2 guys. Kisunas 0-4 (unsurprising) and Delaire 2-5 (surprising).

Well the Cliff Notes are on the Cal basketball website. I'd provide a link, but I don't want to break the CardBoard.

Haha, I meant what Nerd Nation thought about his departure. I had heard rumblings that he wasn't quite asked to leave, but he didn't have much choice. Was the mood here happy or sad? Sorry, that was before I joined.

Trent's contract was up. Bowlsby thought he was for sure going to re-sign. Trent decided to take more money to go elsewhere (LSU), and Bowlsby didn't have a plan B. This led to the hiring of Dawkins, who cratered the program - not entirely his fault. Muir should have fired him 3 years earlier

RE: MBB: STAN 70 WEENIES 55 - Papa John - 02-05-2021

Oh, right, basically what winflop said is my understanding. Although there were varying viewpoints on the CardBoard re: Dawkins, given that he did lead the team to a sweet sixteen 16 appearance. But, IIRC, you'd have to talk to lsjumb76 if you want to relitigate the Dawkins case. Having said that, my memory--again it was a long time ago--was that most folks on the Board were not at all pleased with Trent Johnson and surprised/disappointed with Bowlsby's lack of awareness/preparation.

Thank you and winflop for the scoop. I had heard that the extension offered was so short that he would’ve been in the same lame duck position the following year? Something like that. Anyway, I don’t wish him any ill will.

I lay this entire fiasco at the feet of Bumbling Bob. He assumed that Trent would re-sign after the season and was completely unprepared if he didn't. You ***ALWAYS*** have a Plan B for every head coach, especially your top programs. The big mistake was made a year earlier. Trent's contract should have been extended after the previous season.

I was plenty happy with Trent. 3 of his 4 teams went to the NCAAs and one team made the Sweet 16. In light of the decade-plus since, he's by far the best of the three coaches since Monty - not factoring in his dismal record since he left the Farm.

Last word on Dawkins - the Sweet 16 was ONE GOOD WEEK. Both before and after that week the team looked like it didn't belong in the tournament.

RE: MBB: STAN 70 WEENIES 55 - BobK - 02-06-2021

Plan B was right there. Until he went to cal

RE: MBB: STAN 70 WEENIES 55 - SamuelMcF - 02-06-2021

Funny enough, Trent is now an assistant under Mark Fox at Cal.
