Stanford sports performance coach Ali Kershner exposes inequity -

Actually, the NCAA tournament started the controversy when they gave woefully inadequate support to the women's bubble.

Agree. Headline completely unfair. Ali had courage to bring up an obvious wrong.

I think this isn't just about inequality. If the women's facilities and services were "good" but were not "equal" (however that is measured) to the men's it would be improper. What we have here is much worse. The women's support and services are totally inadequate. They are actively "bad", and there is no excuse for that. It appears the organizers did worse than a half-ass job of organizing the tournament, and there is no excuse for that. It needs to get fixed RTFN and some heads need to roll. Probably won't happen though.

What was wrong with the headline?

Been bothered about this since the video of the swag bags the other day.
What we know so far:
- The women received far fewer items in their swag bags
- Their swag bags did not even celebrate the tournament, just the generic "women's basketball"
- The difference between the "weight rooms" would be laughable if it wasn't so dispicable
- The men appear to have decent food choices, while the women are reduced to prison schlop and any snacks they brought with them
- A child of breastfeeding age will count against the 34-person traveling party

Someone out there in the great land of the CardBoard must be an attorney (anyone have Kaylee's number?) who can file a lawsuit against the NCAA for violating Title IX....

Apparently, they're getting different types of covid tests as well.

Geez,
Some swag bag differences I expected since the swag is normally linked to the local and national sponsors of each specific event. The rest of the observed differences are just pathetic. The NCAA leadership needs to have a few people resign for this one IMHO. Can't help but wonder how much of this happened because Texas is not really that excited about non-football sports.
FWIW - I get the sense that Tara's group dealt with similar "hardships" during their 2 month road trip, so they are likely battle hardened at this stage. This might turn into a net positive, I suspect the tougher the road trip conditions the better for Stanford.

It could be that, but it also is the NCAA's responsibility when picking the venue to ensure the place chosen is willing and able to do what is required, and to make it clear what IS required. Obviously, they didn't do that, and some people do need to resign/be fired. In that I totally agree. Probably won't happen because that would require them to admit having done a very poor job from top to bottom, which they aren't going to do.

Oof, this might be the worst of the disparities here. Most of the antigen tests have a fairly high false-negative rate (that's the bad kind of false result if you want to avoid an outbreak). And the cost is about the same as the gold-standard PCR test.

I don't have a big issue with the swag bags. It's a market and if companies don't want to pay for women, what can be done?
The food and exercise facilities might be a little bit worse, but the Covid test disparity is vomit-inducing to read. Is the NCAA trying to honor Women's History Month by reminding women how second class they have been treated? Just scandalous!

I shot 14 Final Fours for the NCAA. Does anyone around here actually think that the NCAA has ever put the players needs before their own? The guy who now runs the football championship used to run the tournament. A real prince. NOT.

The NCAA annoused
the protocols for the Women's Tourney. Also see
more info on the NCAA protocols
(Compare to
Men's protocols)
Quote:All Tier 1 official travel party participants will be required to undergo and document seven consecutive daily negative COVID-19 tests before arrival in San Antonio. One of the seven tests must be a PCR test.
Diamond Health will serve as the testing provider, with responsibilities that include administration of daily COVID-19 tests for Tier 1 individuals upon arrival and throughout the tournament.
(Note: This is apparently diamondhealthinc.com not diamondhealth.com)
Another
NCAA release indicates
Quote:Finally, Diamond Health/Vivature Inc. has been selected as the testing provider for all championships other than Division I men’s basketball. In addition, DivQuote:
ision I Women’s Basketball is still in negotiations with regards to its testing vendor. Based in Dallas, Diamond Health and Vivature serve more than 400 colleges and universities with technology and administrative services, including COVID-19 testing. They will be responsible for both PCR and antigen testing at the championship sites.
.
From the CDC:
From a
CDC analysis of testing on students (self-swabbed) at a couple of Universities:
Quote:Compared with real-time reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing, the Sofia antigen test had a sensitivity of 80.0% and specificity of 98.9% among symptomatic persons; accuracy was lower (sensitivity 41.2% and specificity 98.4%) when used for screening of asymptomatic persons.
(Note that testing at the NCAA WBB tourney may be a different antigen test.)
Wow. 41% sensitivity. More than half of those with COVID but no symptoms got false negatives.

SI article on the disparity

Apparently the men got a 500 piece tourney puzzle and the women only got a 150 piece set.

In case you missed it ... here is Sedona Prince (Oregon) calling out the hypocrisy and the NCAA's ridiculous response on, of course, Tik-Tok.

Players talk, and apparently Oregon's players/team share videos.

The story made the CBS Evening News. God, Norah O'Donnell needs to go. There are other more capable women but they don't fit the glamour profile. Susan Spencer was one of the best CBS ever had but had no chance back in the day with the Old Boy network at 524 West 57th and at Black Rock HQ.
For a peek at some real CBS pigs read Ira Rosen's new book, Ticking Clock. You have to push his ego aside first. Right on about Wallace and Kroft.

It's almost like the NCAA had someone in charge who made sure the women didn't get the same treatment as the men.
Because how can a sport governing body - with members under Title IX - not have someone in charge of making sure the men and women are treated equally?
