The future of college football? - Spiny_Norman - 04-12-2021

At UCF's spring game on Saturday, players wore their social media handles on their jerseys.

Quote:“We’ve been saying that the future of college football is right here [at UCF],” @CoachGusMalzahn said afterward. “… This is a new age of personal branding. We’re going to embrace it.”

Actually, UCF and all other college football programs don’t really have a choice. They can either embrace players monetizing themselves or those players will simply go elsewhere. This is the new world of college football, where it’s not just about representing your school; it’s about maximizing your brand.

“Everybody was so excited when he did it,” @_dillongabriel said.

“Gus is big on building our brands and wants to help us set up the next part of our lives,” wide receiver @RyanOKeefe23 said.

Added linebacker @fvo56: “It shows that he cares about our lives after football.”

Ugh, the future sucks, add this to the list of reasons why.

I'm guessing pretty soon Stanford donors will have to be putting money in kids' patreon accounts. Otherwise we won't be able to compete in D1.

I had to google “patreon.” It’s the end of the world.

Surprised that DOC doesn't have a Patreon account.

+1. Where I grew up, the only thing with brands were cattle. Personal branding? No thank.

Phogge is more of an Only Fans guy, right? :)

Seriously, Patreon is brilliant. It allows content creators to get paid in ways they never could otherwise. I've no interest being a slave to content creation or paying for such things, but millions of people do. Anything that diffuses the power of monolithic media companies is a very good and much-needed thing for society, IMO.

People monetize YouTube channels, but they can make more money with premium offerings for more access via Patreon.

As for the jerseys, I would like to see the names, but also see the relevance of providing social media handles on them too. Nothing ever stays the same.

I'm learning a lot today. Only Fans? Holy Moly.

I have my old Gator jersey. I'm sure that I can get my Twitter handle stitched to the back. It will be priced a bit less than @andrewluck.com.

The ugliest sports related piece of clothing I've seen is a 60 Minutes producer's NASCAR leather jacket with so many race related patches on it that it was almost impossible to see any of the leather. Of course purchased at MGM Grand when we were in the middle of a Steve Wynn profile. I had hoped that the jacket would "stay in Vegas."

It's the end of the world (as we knew it).

Everyone has a personal brand, like it or not.  And it can change over time.  So it makes sense to manage your personal brand.  Like this guy did over the years, from crooner to criminal to Rat Pack to Chairman of the Board:

Can't wait until Boosters start donating to athletes Patreon or OnlyFans or other way of "monetizing" oneself accounts.

When alumni get to give money to recruits SC will be unbeatable.

RE: The future of college football? - dabigv13 - 04-12-2021

In P12 perhaps, but I suspect they may not have the juice to compete with the SEC for top talent.

Of course no one gives a rat's ass about these guys if they are playing on a minor league football team. It's purely their association with a college football team that makes their personal brand valuable.

NCAA should have given the kids a stipend a while ago, but the cat is out of the bag wrt player compensation now and I don't see how it gets solved in a way that Stanford could or should compete. I expect that plenty of other schools will be in a similar spot, and we'll be left with a very diminished college football landscape that will ultimately be worse off for players, schools, and fans.

Already happening. SC is actively - and aggressively - using their presence in LA and media/brand connections as a recruiting tool.

Big money pouring in when they are winning. Stanford wins from 2010-2018 and has trouble putting butts in seats.
