Davis Mills a 1st round pick? No, 3rd -
OutsiderFan - 04-12-2021
You guys know how much of a Mills fan I am and have been since he was recruited. But, even I can't justify taking him before the 3rd round given he only started 13 college games.

I'm just hoping that he becomes a starter in the next 2 years as I want to have a Stanford alum starting as an NFL quarterback.

Mills had a very impressive Pro Day. I'm not surprised.

Trey Lance and Mac Jones both started 17, I think. Lance all against weak opposition. ( I’m hoping the Niners draft Lance, btw) I don’t think the number of starts is an issue. But his injury history, otoh, does.

Mark Sanchez (16), Cam Newton (14), Mitch Trubisky (13), Dwayne Haskins (14), and Kyler Murray (14) some other notable round 1 QBs with few starts under their belts.

Charlie Casserly released his mock draft this morning. He has the Niners taking Mac Jones at #3, Lance going at the #14 pick and Fields going at the #24 pick.
Really?

Hard to judge Haskins & Murray so far, although I'd say so far that's 1 good (Murray) 1 question mark (Haskins). But of the first three only one (Newton) wasn't a complete bust. Call it 50%. That's probably consistent with other first-round QBs.

Davis has all the tools and the right makeup. Him getting picked up late first or in the second to a team with an established-but-aging quarterback and a good system could be the difference between him being a standout in this class in a few years or having a pro career like Kevin Hogan.

Really?
It sounds like Charlie must be well beyond his “sell by” date. I think two of the three mentioned will go in the Top 5 and the other no later than 10.
I am hoping SF selects Fields. After Lawrence, I think he is the best QB prospect. As for Mills - a solid second rounder. The only question is his health and someone will take a chance.....

I don't believe his health is an issue. I mean, yes, he's had some knee injuries, but he is healthy now and that's what matters. The bigger issue is just going to be what it is for all QBs. Can he read defenses and make sound decisions, particularly under pressure? He can make all the throws. He's big and strong. He's nimble with his feet and can run pretty darn well. He also throws on the run very well.

Mills has the three UCLA picks. What impressed me was that he didn’t quit and kept flinging. I still think that the Niners gave away too much for a guy (Jones) that is quite like Mills.

That was what his high school coach said was one of his strengths, that he was unflappable.
As far as his health is concerned, if I were considering drafting him it would be an issue. Last year was the only year since he was a junior in high school that he has stayed healthy, and he only played five games.

Frank Gore had two ACL injuries in college. Was the Iron Horse of NFL RBs. I've never heard of a QB in the modern era not being able to play because of recurring knee problems.

Hopefully Mills won't be your first. Time will tell.

RG3 was never the same player after his knee injury

I would be really, really surprised if they take Jones. I think Jones is a product of the Alabama system. I don't think he's a bad quarterback -- I think he's a very
good quarterback -- but unless he's the second coming of Tom Brady, I just think he'll be there at #12.
I hope the Niners take either Fields or Trey Lance. I don't think a top NFL team can get away with a pure pocket passer any more, unless they're Drew Brees, Andrew Luck, Tom Brady or Joe Montana.

Agree. And disagree. I hope they pick Lance. But a “ pure pocket passer” is certainly capable of being successful. As long as he can navigate the pocket. It’s great to have the ability to make the secondary play. But the first order of business is making the right decisions within the offense and delivering the pass on time and accurately.
