W Soccer: season end, farewell to Kiki Pickett -
oldalum - 04-19-2021
5 Pac-12 teams made the NCAA tournament, but our record wasn't good enough in this rebuilding year.
This makes Kiki Pickett's last act in a Stanford uniform a fitting end to her illustrious career: in OT she dribbled down the middle of the field, leaving the Cal midfielders in her wake. Attracting the back-line defenders as she neared the box, she threaded a pass to Kuhlmann who scored the golden goal. What a great Stanford student-athlete; she is the model of dogged blue-collar work ethic and determination on the field. It was a privilege to watch her consistently beat players much bigger than her in 1:1 matchups.

Plus her Championship winning kick in 2019.

I'll also remember that Kiki won the shoot out and the NC in 2019 vs. North Carolina.

We lost an all-time great in Macario and an outstanding weapon in Smith, but I thought we had enough coming back to not make this a "rebuilding" year where we don't even make the postseason. A down year, yes, in comparison to the championship team the previous year, but we had a nice nucleus with Girma, Haley, Meyer, and Kiki all back.

Girma knee injury. Haley also injured I gather

Girma tore her ACL in the fall and was out for the rest of the year. Haley hardly played due to injury. Not counting them (I had figured Haley would turn pro after being drafted), we only had 5 juniors and seniors on the roster, 8 sophomores, and 10 frosh. Lacking the usual summer start to practice and numerous preconference games, I thought from the start that this would be a rebuilding year -- and the first few games, painful to watch, confirmed it. We got a lot better through the season and will be starting from a much better place next season.

Is Haley coming back? She was not celebrated during senior day.

Yes. Kiki is the only senior who was not planning on returning for the fall.
