MGolf P12 championship -
Spiny_Norman - 04-26-2021
The P12 men's golf championship is being played today through Wednesday at Mayacama in Santa Rosa. ASU is probably the favorite. They are ranked 9th in the country. No other P12 team is in the top 20.
It's a 6-count-5 event. Stanford's line up is Brown, Vilips, Shimp, Thorbjornsen, Ng, and Menon. With players making the turn on Day 1, Stanford is currently at +1, 9 shots behind ASU. Ng is the only Cardinal under par right now at -2.

I'd consider a top 3 finish a success. National rankings are relatively meaningless for Pac-12 teams because unlike most of the other major conference teams they had no fall season which created a small sample size.
Also, this is a 72-hole tournament with 36 holes today and 18 holes on Tuesday & Wednesday. Most college tournaments are 54 holes, so there is a TON of extra golf to be played

Top 3 may be the best Stanford can do with Arizona and ASU 10 shots ahead of the field as teams are finishing round 1.
I'll add that Mayacama is an odd course, a shortish par 72 (6785 yards) with 5 par 3s and 5 par 5s. Stanford as a team is -8 on the par 5s and +9 on the par 3s. It is not a course for bomb-and-gouge.

As a point of comparison, Stanford is 6.742 yards but is only par 70

Stanford's pretty flat, 136 slope rating. Mayacama has lots of terrain changes and a 150 slope rating, it's a good cardio workout. Also lots of ravines and gulches.

Stanford has started the second round with a bang, -10 through a median of 5 holes. Ng has four birdies through seven holes and Vilips has two birdies and an eagle through 4. We've jumped over SC and OSU into fourth place, and we are now 4 strokes back of the leader.

I think the vast majority of college players who have played Stanford this year would beg to differ with your assessment of its difficulty.
Men (The Goodwin): 145 players entered, 19 finished under par (13%)
Women (Pac-12): 53 players entered, 8 finished under par (15%)
At this moment, 22 of 72 players at Mayacama are under par (31%)

Yikes. We are something like a combined +16 over our last three holes, and we've fallen back to 5th place at -1 for the day.

Looks like holes 10-14 are the toughest part of the course over the first two rounds. A little bit of a rally on 15-18 will see how the rest of the team does on those holes but so far a par and six birdies
Tied with the Toejams for 4th, 5 shots behind the Ducks. Looks like AZ & ASU are the class of the conference.

Now three behind the Ducks, and 5 ahead of USC.

We end the day in fourth place, -3 for the second round, -5 overall. We are ten strokes behind Oregon, and 20 behind the leader, ASU. WE are five strokes ahead of OSU (in 5th place), though they are still on the course.

Our guys seem to view a par as that odd score that pops up about 50 percent of the time, surrounded on the score card by yellow, red, green, blue and black scores. Way too many of the last 3 types today.

Other than Vilips 9 (!!!!) on 16, they finished pretty strong after the tough run of holes 10-14. At least Vilips' score was the one thrown out in Round 2.
Shimp and Ng in the Top 10 is nice, but on the whole they gotta play better tomorrow and Wednseday to have a shot at catching Oregon for third. 10 strokes is a pretty substantial lead, not one that generally can be overcome in one round.

Yes. I said they will have to play well Tuesday & Wednesday, and that they will need stronger play both days to overcome a 10 stroke deficit

Halfway through the 3rd round we continue to make a lot of birdies but we also have too many bogies and worse. Looks like our birdie rate is competitive with the other top schools, but we also have too many bogies and worse in comparison. Some parts of out game seem missing in action.

some really interesting stats: right now, we are the worst team on the par 3's by 1 stroke (+21), and the best team on the par 5's by 11 strokes (-38). we have the most birdies by 9 (74 birdies) and the second most eagles (5 eagles vs. 7 for the top team). we also have the third fewest pars. the stats don't show bogies and doubles, but i would assume we probably rank high on those as well.

2/3 of the way thru the 3rd round, Oregon has increased its lead over us by 4 more strokes, and we've been passed by Oregon St.
