Probably the players don't like concussions.

"
The Guardian Cap is the leading soft-shell helmet cover engineered for impact reduction. It brings padded, soft-shell technology to the outside of the decades old hard-shell football helmet and reduces impact up to 33%."
"Guardian Caps are currently utilized by 200+ colleges, 1500+ high schools, and 500+ youth programs to reduce impact during practice. As of 2020, NFL testing validates the benefit of Guardian Caps and the NFL and NFLPA have decided to permit the Guardian Cap to be used by lineman in NFL practices."

You can see photos of the caps in use by a bunch of other college teams like FSU, Clemson, Penn St, Texas, Michigan St, and Oklahoma St.

Quote:As the coronavirus weakens its grip, Stanford's spring football practices began Tuesday with an almost-normal feel at Elliott Field.

Dumb question: If they're helpful, why not wear them in games? Who cares if the helmet logos wouldn't look as great? I know another thing that's bad for football's brand - concussions and CTE.

Easy answer. My daughter is a budding water polo goalie and had her first concussion from a ball to the head about five months ago. She refuses to wear any protective gear in practice cause it makes her look dopey. Most of her coaches turn a blind eye. Another one of her coaches (though haven't seen him with the club team for awhile) mandates his high school goalies wear a protective cap. He told me the goalies face relentless ridicule from their teammates, but he still enforces it. Good for him!
And for the answer. . . mandate it. Kids won't listen to their parents and only occasionally to their coaches.
And to think this is from a conservative/libertarian. . ..

The only reason not everyone in all levels of basketball shoots free throws underhanded.

Until you get beaned by a wild azz Lefty from Santa Clara you don’t know how important helmets are. Rampant social media shaming doesn’t help today’s kids one iota.

Only a matter of time before they figure out how to put logos on these things and make them part of gameday

He also needs to enforce a rule that anyone who ridicules players wearing a protective cap get to wear one too!
