Speaking of the 2021 football season... - gailtate - 05-05-2021

...anyone have any notion of how season tix sales are coming along? No, this is not a smart-ass inquiry; I am genuinely interested. Not in the season's prospects so much as how things look through the periscope of the AD. I suspect it'll be tough sledding at ol' Arrillaga this year.

anecdotal info from our tailgate group, everyone has renewed for this season (~25 tickets all together).  Over the last 5 or so years we have lost I think 5 people (four were family plan ticket buyers) as ticket holders but they still show up to tailgate at about half of the home games

I have purchased new season tix after not renewing last season.  I attend games with my 13yo son and my 78yo dad.  We will all be vaccinated by then, and it’s an outdoor venue, so it would be irrational in my opinion to worry much about infection risk.  I missed live college football last season, so I am doubly interested in attending this season.

If the team “executes poorly,” my enjoyment will be reduced but I would still attend.

But that’s just me.  I agree with the theory that it will be even more of a ghost town than usual.  The availability of prime seats on the seating chart further suggests this.

Speaking of fan enthusiasm (or lack thereof), I have been disappointed at how little the students care about football games. You can be in Stanford Stadium at kickoff and see almost no one in the student section. It might be half full by halftime, then empty out again in the 4th quarter. I see the paltry crowds at men's hoops and baseball as well and wonder how much the average Stanford student cares whether Stanford has 25 teams or 36 teams, whether they compete in D1 or D3 or at all. There does seem to have been some shift in attitude toward sports among the student body over the years.

The average student probably has better things to do than attend. The average student was probably not a Sixth Man.

Definitely so. It used to be true for some of the student population. Now it is true for substantially more of them.

Plus you have an administration that is clearly not athletically inclined.  They have sent a message and it doesn't help boost attendance.
