Go Cardinal!!

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2021

The early teams (the lower 12 seeded teams) are approaching their final holes. No teams are under par. Looks like the course is providing a championship test.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-21-2021

Among the teams that have finished, the low score is +1.

Stanford is at -1 coming up on the 9th hole.  That's good for a tie for second.  Rachel Heck is tearing it up; -3 through 6, good for first place.

Heck is carrying the team right now. Krauter and Ye have yet to birdie a single hole.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2021

Conditions in the afternoon are tougher than the morning. My guess is windy with dried out greens. Stanford is tied for low score among the afternoon teams at +3 midway through the back 9. The top ranked team in the country South Carolina is at +20.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-21-2021

Yeah, crazy that UofSC is in last place.

Heck cooled down; she's +1 in the back nine, but still in first place.  The 10th hole killed us (all five players bogied), but the team has held its own.  Nobody has pulled ahead; there are 11 teams within 7 strokes of one another.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2021

A good start for the Cardinal. They finish at +3 and currently sit in 3rd place. Rachel Heck leads the individual race at -3. Frosh Sadie Englemann shot even par. Brooke Seay and Aline Krauter were at +3. Angelina Ye bogeyed the first 5 holes but played even par the rest of the way. Remember the goal is to finish 72 holes in the top 8 and qualify for match play.

Not much time to dwell on today's result. Stanford starts tomorrow at 6:30 am pacific.

Thanks so much to Spiny and BC for these updates. They take me back to the 2015 (!!!) final and Mariah Stackhouse's remarkable finish to bag the championship for us. Am I remembering correctly? Didn't she win the last three three consecutive holes. If not, that's OK. The way I remember it is oh, so enjoyable.

It was remarkable. The team score was 2-2. Stackhouse's match would determine the NC. She was 2 down with 2 to play. Even a half on a hole would have won the NC for Baylor. Stackhouse won both 17 and 18 with birdies to force extra holes then won on the 19th when Haley Davis missed a short putt. I still get goosebumps watching the finish.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2021

Winflop, the Golfweek story on today's round said that Heck was wearing an ankle brace. She said that she injured it playing basketball over Xmas. Did you notice if she was wearing an ankle brace at the P12s or the regionals? Did not seem to affect her play today.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-21-2021

Thanks for the link Spiny.  That was classy of Davis to give the interview; it is the sort of thing that she very easily could have said, "I never want to talk about that again" and no one would have blamed her.

And really, the only thing disappointing is that the match ended on Davis' missed putt, rather than Stackhouse holing hers.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2021

The team is midway through its back 9 today. Conditions appear to be much more favorable for scoring compared to yesterday afternoon. I assume that means that it is not as windy. Rachel Heck continues her assault on par to lead the way. She is -4 on the day and leads the individual race by 3 shots. The other Stanford players are right around par for the day. Stanford and Duke have separated from the field.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2021

Stanford has completed its 2nd round, shooting a stellar -10 total of 278. Rachel Heck shot the low round of the tournament at 67 but she was ably supported by 3 teammates who also broke par - Angelina Ye at 69 and Brooke Seay and Aline Krauter who both shot 71. Stanford's drop score was Sadie Englemann at +1, 73.

Stanford leads the field with Duke in 2nd, 4 shots behind as the late half of the field starts their rounds. Rachel Heck is 5 shots up in the individual race.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2021

All rounds completed now for Round 2. As expected, the afternoon teams faced more difficult playing conditions (~20 mph wind) and no team came close to Stanford's earlier -10 team score on the day.

For Round 3 tomorrow, Stanford tees off early again at 6:30 am Pacific. It is important to be in the morning wave of teams. The golf course has played 2-3 strokes tougher per player on average in the afternoon.

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - BostonCard - 05-22-2021

We are 21 strokes clear of the 9th place team.

Apologies for the delayed reply and lack of updates. I'm on vacation for mrs winflop's birthday - slumming it at Pebble Beach where I was duly humbled.

I had not seen an ankle brace on Heck, but if she injured it five months ago and has won FIVE individual titles since then, I'm thinking it's more of a precaution given that this is a 6-day event instead of the usual 3-day event.

I continue to be in awe of Heck's play in particular but I think earlier comments about her "carrying" the team are misplaced. College golf requires depth because your team score is the sum of the best four of your five rounds each day.. Stanford not only has Heck in the lead but the other four players are all in the top 25 out of 128 players. No other team has all five of their players that high on the leaderboard. If you dropped Heck completely and counted the other four players, we would be at +7, tied for fourth.

Depth is also what wins match play. Watch for Krauter in particular on Tue/Wed. She's the defending British Amateur champion. You don't win titles like that without being really, REALLY good at match play. If we get to the finals, it wouldn't surprise me if she were at least 2-1 if not 3-0.

Looking beyond the coming week, I really wonder how long Heck is going to stick around before going pro. Unlike Krauter, she has sufficient length to play on the LPGA today. Krauter doesn't hit it much farther than I do. My guess is she will get to test the waters beyond the US Women's Open with sponsors exemptions over the summer.

Absolutely; Heck is this team's star, perhaps the GOAT, and likely he college player of the year, but the depth of this team is key to its success.  This team doesn’t have the weakness at five. that forces the other four players to play well.  In recent years, our weakness at four and five ultimately kept us from two NCAA titles.

Look at these average 2021 scores for his Stanford team against the average score, arguably, for the ideal  player in that slot, one through five:

  1.  Heck, 69.6 (71)

  2.  Ye, 71.5  (72)

  3.  Englemann, 72.6 (72.5)

  4.  Seay, 73.1 (73.5)

  5.  Krauter, 73.2 (73.5)

Now compare those average scores to the career average scores for what might arguably be the all-time Stanford golf team:

Andrea Lee, 71.62

Mariah Stackhouse, 72.03

Albane Valenzuela, 72.86

Lauren Kim, 72.63

Casey Danielson, 73.4

Mhari McKay, 74.18

RE: WGolf - NCAA Championship - winflop - 05-23-2021

Yeah, they're that good. Top to bottom. And the alternate Calista Reyes is no slouch with a scoring average of 75, but she pays very little with this roster so it's a small sample size.

Next year should be VERY interesting, especially if Heck stays. Nobody's graduating, and they add Rose Zhang - the #1 amateur in the world. Ye could also turn pro.
