Anything to expect or look forward to seeing?

Got my tickets. Looking forward to see what the team has so far.
I think running backs, receivers and some linemen and def backs are known quantities, and I’m excited to discover the previously unknown quantities. Fehoko and Adebo are two recent players who emerged quickly and made a big impact their first year starting. Who is ready to step up next?
Biggest questions/areas of interest for me are quarterback, team health, and tackling.

I think there will be some growing pains at QB, but, barring injury to the starter, I expect that the offense will be decent to good.
I am concerned about the defense. Last year, the defense rose to the occasion when it had to in those last 4 games, but that doesn't hide the fact that in 2020 Stanford allowed 5.46 yards per rush, which is 115th out of 127 FBS teams. We did not fare much better with passing yards per attempt (8.33, 108th).
Stanford's defense hasn't been decent since 2018 and hasn't been among the top defenses in the conference since 2016.

I liked it better when the alumni played the varsity and I think the alumni won a couple.

In that case, pcgoode, you should check out the following YouTube video on Tanner McKee, if you haven't already:

Thanks for posting this. As someone who has grappled with several instances of melanoma, I am now going to be rooting extra hard for Tanner.

It was great to see which alums could still play and which ones got the better of the undergrads. Remember when John Paye played against his dad who played corner back. Yep the alums won a few on the field and then always produced dominating victories at the keggers not only afterwards but during the actually game.

Stanford has a report on the defense in advance of the spring game. Of note in the article is this description of the spring game:
Quote:The late start to spring ball caused coaches to be even more cautious of injuries, given the short gap before fall camp starts. The spring game, for instance, will not be a traditional 60-minute battle of split squads, but rather reps of the offense against the defense, with an emphasis on specifics such as red-zone situations.

It's been a long time since there was a split squad game, hasn't it? What year did the offense vs. defense format with the D getting points for stops begin?

I think Stanford's offense will be decent with either McKee or West at QB. However if we are going to have a good year (say 8-4) it is going to have to be a lot better than decent, because as you say the defense is a big concern.
So I hope one of the two (most likely McKee if anyone does) emerges as outstanding.

It seems a more accurate summary would be something like...
Due to the fact so few defensive lineman have been recruited in the last few years, we can't risk injury to those we do have on the team so near the upcoming season's practices. Therefore, we will limit the amount of game-like competition in what we call, but really isn't a Spring Game by any definition. We apologize to the fans who wanted to see something more compelling.

I don’t think Shaw considers what the fans want or expect at all.

I think Shaw feels that having the team ready to play this fall is more important than maximizing the entertainment value of the Spring Game (or whatever you want to call it).
Count me as one person who supports this notion.

If I was shaw I also would not GAF what the fans want out of a Spring Game.
My point about not recruiting/developing enough DL stands, even if this was March and there was the typical time between Spring practice and Summer schedule.

2012 maybe? It was at Kezar Stadium.
I remember reading that David Shaw wanted the 1st team to get more reps together, so instead of letting team captains pick their squads they did 1st team vs. 2nd team. It was a blowout, so the next year they switched to offense vs. defense.

Sounds about right. I got rear ended when I stopped for that rarest of things in San Francisco, a parking spot, and a car came racing around the curve and slammed into me. That would have been 2011 or 2012.
Not sure why they don’t do first team offense plus second team defense against first team defense and second team offense. This way the first team O goes up against the first team D and the second team O goes up against the second team D.
