It’s all about the Benjamins. Nothing else matters. Sad. But for these contracts coaching salaries would be less. And we’re that across the board, I’m relatively certain Shaw would be fine with that.

Like most fan bases, Stanford fans are front-runners. But most fan bases also have "optimism springs eternal" feelings about new seasons, and are there to support their teams in national showcase games like Stanford is playing in Arlington vs. Kansas State, no matter the game time. It's also common that fan bases will travel to see a big OOC game and kind of make a vacation out of it.
But, given the potential caution of Stanford fans about the global - not just in U.S. pandemic - and the fact the game is in Texas, a state not taking any precautions, I'd assume, an already reluctant to travel for any game Stanford fan base, might have its representation depressed by both pandemic concerns and also potentially not being enthused about the Football team.
All this is to say, David Shaw shouldn't be publicly complaining about anything regarding this game and only give already likely less than chomping at the bit Stanford fans reasons TO attend the neutral site made for TV event, not justify skipping it. I'm concerned about 500 Stanford fans will show and all anyone will talk about is how Stanford fans don't support David Shaw and/or his program. I hope this isn't some sort of pre-emptive strike he is putting out only because he's feeling low ticket sales to Stanford fans and wants to create an excuse for what he fears will be paltry fan support at AT&T Stadium.
The early start time Cal had in Oxford didn't stop them from knocking off Ole Miss in their home stadium. Complaining about start times, no matter the motivation, is a bad look. That stuff is negotiated between the schools, conferences and TV networks, and Shaw knows it. If 9am PST games are a non-starter for you, make it a negotiating chip when doing the contracts to schedule and broadcast the games.

Few Stanford fans will travel to Arlington for the game, but that has zilch to do with COVID-19.

Apologies if this has been published before on the CARDboard, but David Shaw is none too happy with Fox for scheduling the opener at 9 a.m. pacific time.
https://theathletic.com/news/stanford-coach-david-shaw-pissed-off-at-fox-for-early-kickoff-time-for-opener/I4oi6ZUaKg9c
Stanford coach David Shaw said Friday he is “pissed off at Fox” for giving the Cardinal a noon ET/9 a.m. PT kickoff time for their season opener on Sept. 4 against Kansas State in Arlington, Texas. The game will air on FS1.
It reminds me of when I lived in the DC Metroplex and the Giants came to play the Nationals on July 4. Because the city had to plan for fireworks among other things, they mandated that the game begin at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time...8:30 a.m. body clock time for the SF Giants.
My young son was out visiting and we went to the game. He had remembered from his club sports days that there was a propensity for eastern schools to schedule games very early to give their teams an advantage over schools from the west coast. So he predicted the Giants would get clobbered, which they did. Bumgarner's first six pitches included two doubles and two home runs. Game over...
And we all remember the 9 a.m. body clock time Stanford vs. Texas opener on 9/4/99, won by Texas 69-17. So I understand Coach Shaw's frustration. Of course, one year later, Stanford won an evening game at home vs. Texas, 27-24

It's also still technically a K State home game. Their ticket allotment is 30k. We have 3k.

re: early (PDT) games, I lean towards - best team wins regardless of game time. As OF noted, Cal beat Mississippi (and North Carolina a few years before). The key is preparation. Practice early in the morning, get to the venue a couple days before game day, and, most importantly, take a positive/no excuses, attitude about the game.
By complaining about the game time, Shaw has given the players a reason to lose. At this point, he should be talking about the opportunity of playing before a national audience in a NFL venue and what that could mean. Beating K-State would put Stanford in the spotlight and on track for a fast start to the season.

Shaw's not the only one complaining about kick-off times, from the Oklahoma AD on the OU/NU 11am CT kick-off
Quote:"We are bitterly disappointed that the great Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry, on the 50th anniversary of the Game of the Century, will kick off at 11 a.m. [local time]," Castiglione said in a statement. "We tried every possible avenue to proactively make our case. The Big 12 Conference also supported our strenuous efforts to secure a more traditional time that would honor this game and our fans. However, in the end, our TV partner chose to exercise its full contractual rights and denied our requests."

Didn't we start the home games at 11 am back in the early 80s? So as someone who will be the game, that's kind of nostalgic.

That’s 53 too many…
As for the rest of your post, I think Shaw is spot on. West Coast teams playing games at 9:00 am Pacific Time puts them at a competitive disadvantage. It’s especially galling when it’s a neutral site game.

Never started that early. Back then, September and October games started at 1:00. November games started at 12:30 as there were no lights.

I remember the 2pm starts but at some point the starts were at 1:30, for years. Bobbbbbbbb, what was the first night game? Texas or Colorado perhaps. They did play a bunch of night games in the Coliseum in the 50's and 60's. Sometimes SC played on a Friday night, UCLA daytime Saturday and the Rams on Sunday.
Back in my day at Kezar there was a HS game on Thursday and Friday, CCSF on Friday night and the Niners on Sunday. Until 1952 USF and sometimes St. Mary's played their home games at Kezar. No wonder the grass disappeared between the 20's in October.

Hey, you could have played HS football in Seattle where the field was dirt, sand, and sawdust. In September it was hard as a rock. Then the rains came and it was mud. You would spend time after the game picking sawdust particles out of your arms. Then you would go home, put your uniform on the back fence and hose it down to get enough mud off it so it wouldn't clog up the washer.
Seattle isn't called the Emerald City for nothing.
