Bottom line, they looked at where "elite talent" as determined by their recruiting rankings wound up being drafted:
Anyways, Stanford is 7th by that metric for players recruited between 2012 and 2016 (who generally would have been drafted sometime between 2015 and 2021).

The study uses 247sports' recruit rankings as the gold standard (naturally). But another explanation for doing well in this scoring system, in addition to a program doing a good job developing players relative to other programs, is that the program does a better job than 247sports at
evaluating high school players (as the article acknowledges in passing--they admit they are most interested in learning how programs do with the 4 and 5 star players).

Excellent point. Note it also means that a school that internally rates a 24/7 ranked top 100 player akin to more like a top 250 player, but who would still recruit such a player with gusto will be disadvantaged.
