The comments at the bottom of this article are… illuminating — at least about the writers of said comments.

I don't see any comments, but I'm glad the snub is getting the criticism it deserves.

Yahoo discontinued the comment sections on their articles at about this time last year.  The political temperature must have gotten too high.  I personally thought they would never be brought back, and am surprised they did, albeit on a different platform.

I can see comments at the bottom of the article.  I don't think they would be worth the metaphorical paper they'd be printed on, TBH, and I wouldn't encourage anyone else to look at them.

I was a big fan of Nneka when she played for Stanford.  Being old school I liked the way she was respectful toward opponents and didn't celebrate excessively after a play.

Against your advice I read the comments.  They say she is injured.  I don't follow the WNBA so I don't know the extent of her injury.   If she is injured it seems reasonable to me an injured player is not selected.  Did Staley make the final roster decisions?  She seems like a fair and solid coach to me.

The article doesn't speculate about why she was snubbed.  If she was unfairly snubbed there has to be a reason behind it.

Nneka sprained her MCL and was expected to be back in 4-6 weeks. That timeline would work perfectly for returning prior to the Olympic break.

Meanwhile, Taurasi is expected to return to action starting tomorrow. I know this because it's been blasted all over unlike any return to action in WNBA history. I'm surprised they didn't rent out space on one of the video displays in Times Square. Given how sure they seemed to be about Taurasi returning in time for the Olympics after she fractured her sternum, I'm wondering if it wasn't all made up so Taurasi could get some rest prior to international competition. I mean, 1) she is old; and 2) there's precedent.

I will not be watching or supporting the Women’s Basketball team during the Olympics.

staley is not on the selection committee. luigi auriemma is, and there are 5 UConn players on the team - again.

so here's a link to Nigerian team (may need updates). Imagine adding 2 Ogwumikes (3?) plus an Ogunbowale plus an Onyenwere.

I could root for that team.  Sigh.  They're probably thin on talent behind the ex-collegians though.  Team Nigeria has won the two most recent AfroBasket women's championships (2017, 2019) and reached the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIBA world championship.  They hadn't qualified for any Olympics since 2004.

I won't go that far. I'm still an American and this team represents my country. But my level of enthusiasm will be somewhat diminished.

I hope that behind the scenes Tara is tearing Luigi and the others a whole set of new ones. Part of me wishes she'd take her displeasure public

While I recognize that Luigi is his given name, I am wondering what people think they are accomplishing by using it rather than the name he goes by.

Maybe it's for edification purposes.  Made me look it up to figure out the reference.
I am wondering what people think they are accomplishing by questioning the use of formal, birth names versus nicknames.
Are you implying something sinister?

well back in junior high school when we'd find out someone's given name that they had been "hiding" by using a nickname we'd often take great joy in calling them by their given name for a few weeks as it seemed to annoy them no end...of course back then finding this out when the teacher first called role in the class was particularly amusing...

RE: Four reasons Nneka Ogwumike is the biggest snub in Team USA’s Olympics history - 81alum - 06-28-2021

Getting away from the name calling, I wonder if there is a theory about why Nneka keeps being snubbed?  Is it that American women's basketball is so far ahead of the world that the selectors know they can win gold with less than the best, and so they pick on some other basis?  And is that basis pure collegiate prejudice?  Is it that Nneka is a player advocate and is being punished for this?  Do some players draw better TV ratings than others?  Is Nneka not one of them?  Are they truly skeptical of her abilities despite all of her awards?  Is it really an old-girls club?

Maybe the best thing that could happen would be for some other nation to beat team USA, provoking intense scrutiny about how we picked our team.  Didn't Oregon just do that two years ago?  What if instead of Oregon it was Australia or Russia or Serbia or Spain?

This is exactly what happened after the US Men lost in 1988, provoking the organization of the "Dream Team" in 1992.  It sounds like the women may need this to happen.  A team of aging stars and collegiate patronage positions might wind up not being our best, and maybe less-than-the-best won't be good enough.

It was put in the form of a question because I legitimately want to know why the posters (I think two people separately referred to him as "Luigi").  Maybe it was meant as a sign of respect.  Maybe it was to get us all to look at his wikipedia page to learn more.  Maybe Auriemma asked to be referred to by his given name, and I missed it.  Maybe it was a way of "othering" him, which I wouldn't call sinister, but is probably unnecessary.  I generally favor using the name that people prefer, and since I have never seen Auriemma refer to himself as Luigi, I'd just as soon refer to him Geno.  However, I'm not the name police; people are free on this board to refer to him however they want.  I was just curious about the motivations.

The theory, as canonically given for over the last 20+ years, is that UConn unreasonably dominates the political landscape of women's basketball, from the collegiate recruiting scene to NCAA women's tournament seedings to Olympic team selection.  Nneka's snub is yet another data point on that trendline.

exactly - just teasing or mildly disrespecting him in impotent revenge for his (presumably) snubbing nneka repeatedly.

I’m wondering if Nneka's consistent "team oriented" approach has kept her out of the spotlight. Players with attitude (like Taurasi) or players who insert themselves into a game in flamboyant ways by shooting a lot get more attention. Nneka has excelled by being a team player and by making the players around her stand out. Consider the way that she coexisted with Candace Parker on the Sparks for several years without any apparent ego conflict. She has always exuded a humble presence and may not have gotten her due simply because so-called all stars often achieve that status by appearing bigger than life.
