Meanwhile, three Ogwumike sisters selected for Nigeria's provisional women's squad:

If they make the Nigerian team, they will play the USA women on July 27.

Geaux Cardinal!

RE: Congrats to KZ Okpala - SamuelMcF - 07-07-2021

I posted this because there is already a TON of discussion about the Ogwumikes. They have their own thread.

RE: Congrats to KZ Okpala - BobK - 07-07-2021

I posted in the O sisters tread. :)

Is that a Stanford uniform he has on in his photo?

Apologies for the thread drift.  I didn't see previous posts on the Ogwumike sisters playing for Nigeria..

Yes! Good eye!

I've often wondered if I could make an Olympic roster if I joined the curling team for Chinese-Taipei.

Interesting sport curling.  I competed in the Australian curling championships twice.  Lost in the team finals one year.  Only 2 times I ever curled.  Was a good laugh.  My Canadian Aussie friends were the core of the Australian Curling men's team.

That is a game I would watch!

Same thoughts here... If I had learned how to ski, could I have represented Mexico in the Winter Olympics?

The answer is probably no. Individual sports have time standards that have to be met to qualify. Team sports usually have preliminary qualifying tournaments that determine the field.

However, there are two scenarios that are workarounds. 1) The Olympics want geographic representation so it's possible to qualify as part of a team in a sport from a particularly weak region, without being a world class athlete. 2) many teams in foreign countries are selected by committees instead of trials, so it's possible that with enough influence you can be selected for a team. There have been examples of wealthy or powerful individuals (or relatives of committee members) being selected for an equestrian team or as the last man on the bench for a handball team, etc.

RE: Congrats to KZ Okpala - fullmetal - 07-08-2021

There have been a number of rowers from less-represented nations who are actually affiliated by heritage rather than actual geographic ties.  Small nations would love to send Olympic representatives, so they'll have less stringent requirements for Olympic team affiliation than straight-up citizenship.

In Rio, the Nigerian women's single sculler was Coco Ukogu, Stanford '14 who learned to row in Philly, raced at Stanford, and then qualified for Rio at the African continental qualifiers.  She is now an orthopedic surgery resident at Harvard Med.

Nigeria stuns US in exhibition game

KZ started and played a fair amount, but didn't score.

How does the player who played the most minutes for the winning team not score a single solitary point? Don't know if I've ever seen that happen before.

Anyway, thanks for linking the box score. I tried finding it yesterday and couldn't.

I didn't watch the game, but maybe he played that much as a defensive specialist? Dennis Rodman remarkably scored zero points but got at least 20 rebounds seven times in his career. Although looking at the stat sheet KZ wasn't exactly piling up the rebounds, steals, or assists.

RE: Congrats to KZ Okpala - BobK - 07-11-2021

I read KZ was on Durant at the end of the game
