QB recruiting -

I've noticed our cupboard of elite QB talent in the pipeline is pretty bare. Our latest QB commit has 4 passing TDs and 2 Ints in his entire high school career, and we haven't exactly been on target with higher ranked recruits. Is this lack of top talent due to the lack of campus visits or bad on field record trend?

Or is it due to the number of injuries/issues in strength & conditioning?
Or is it due to the game planning & play calling of Shaw & Fanboy Hero OC?
Or is it due to the decline of depth along the OL?
There are a myriad of issues that seem to be leading top recruits to feel increasingly less confident about their chances to play in the NFL if they come to Stanford as opposed to other places.

I think a lot has to do with the fact that Stanford has a type: tall, pocket passer who runs straight ahead when asked. Since that is becoming less the trend at the college and pro levels, there are fewer and fewer QBs of this ilk being groomed on the HS stage.
My son never considered going out for the team given his skill set and the kind of QB-unfriendly offense the Card runs.

Trying to figure out what is not “QB friendly” about the offense they run? They run a pro style offense that puts their QBs in a good position with NFL. They throw a fair amount out of 4 receiver sets. They don’t allow their QBs to be beaten to a pulp. Generally they have pass protected well.
Sure it’s not Mike Leach winging it all over the place. But how did that work for Costello? And while you are at it look at how many QBs thezPirate has sent to NFL.
People act as if the offense is the same as it was in ‘12. It’s not. Not even close. In case you missed it, Stanford was second in PAC 12 in passing yards. Mills second to Slovis with a little over 300 yards passing a game. Only SC and OSU threw it more than Stanford. And despite a history of injuries (starting before he came to Stanford) he was a third round NFL pick.
Stanford’s biggest problem isn’t the play calling or the game plan. Not by a long shot. I wish it were. They had some great years while people moaned about their play calling and “predictable “ offense. Their problem is they have a poor defense. Only Arizona gave up more rushing yards. I suspect defense will be the big issue in ‘21.

Query - does his career consist of 2021? And how many games did he play? What year are we talking about?

If you’re a 5’11” dual threat QB with stronger prospects for becoming a pro baseball player than a pro quarterback, then the Stanford offense is not that friendly.
RE: QB recruiting -
BostonCard - 07-08-2021
Recruiting generally has struggled the last few years, and Shaw has been determined not to recruit more than one guy a year, so if the top pick decides on another school, then many of the other top QBs have committed elsewhere and we are left trying to find a lower ranked QB. In the past, we would have taken a QB gap year, but at least Shaw has stopped doing that.

8 games in total in his hs career (in Covid impacted 2020, no other seasons played) with a 56% passing accuracy:
https://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/ari-patu/_h-7ZHN4EeiAyNdjx8XCRA/football/stats.htm. I know Shaw offered him based on on his camp play primarily no doubt. It's certainly interesting since he's one of the first football early enrollees no less.
At least the team has McKee and potentially leveled up backup in West. Hopefully Tanner lives up to his potential.

This is Patu. But the conversation could be about Daniels
https://gostanford.com/sports/football/roster/ari-patu/17997
For the record Patu is 6-5
Daniels is 6-3

One good thing about having two consecutive years with a lightly-recruited QB is a very friendly depth chart for 2023 recruits. McKee either will be perceived as good enough to go to the NFL or not good enough to fend off all challengers. A five-star 2023 QB who enrolls early might be able to play as a true freshman.

Has Shaw ever played a true freshman QB?

No, no, and no.
(And for the record I agree with you that all 3 are big issues, though OL depth is being rectified.)

Whoa there .. if Andrew was not given the green light to play, having Tavita as the starter, I don't see a true freshman starting in a Shaw offense.
Of course, now that a freshman can play X amount of games without losing a year of eligibility, there's a chance to insert a stud freshman QB in the last few games.

If Shaw had actually offered Miller Moss (who would've committed on the spot), this wouldn't be a thread. And we would've taken a gap year this year, so I guess THAT would've been a different thread.

Luck was due to play in Texas when the storm hit abd quashed that. I have always thought that Dad Oliver didn’t want to see his son get beat up on a poor team.
I don’t know Moss but committing for what? We didn’t allow early enrollment then

Can anyone make a credible case that QB recruiting is any more problematic than recruiting in general for Stanford Football?
Stanford is always behind the curve with everything it does in its football program as far as I can see. There is no innovation. There is no commitment to bring fresh ideas into the program with highly ambitious coaches that proactively innovate rather than creatively catch up.
Harbaugh gave the "Stanford is like the NFL" brand to the program and created an us against the world culture. Shaw embodies a much more privileged mindset that has devolved "Intellectual Brutality" to "Book Smart Slapping."

I don't think Shaw is as anti-dual threat QB as it looks recently. Luck, Hogan and Chryst (pre-injury) ran a decent amount. Costello and Mills had mobility issues post injuries.

It doesn't look like Shaw is anti-dual threat QB to anyone paying attention. All Stanford's QB offers since West have been for exceptionally mobile QBs. Maybe Miller Moss wasn't offered because he isn't a runner? McKee, Patu, and Daniels are all quite capable runners.
RE: QB recruiting -

Stanford is not anti-DT. Stanford has consistently recruited mobile quarterbacks, and most recently Patu who is definitely categorized as a dual threat. Ryan Burns was primarily a running QB until his senior year of high school.
Based on recruiting ratings Stanford has by far fared strongest in quarterbacks and offensive linemen.
I have no idea whether Daniels will be successful or not, but recruiting has evolved to where camp and combine performances outweigh high school statistics in importance, Maalik Murphy is a brobdingnagian recruit already being hailed as the future savior of Texas football. He has thrown for 9 TD and 6 interceptions heading into his senior year of high school this fall.

???
I was at the TCU game (where Tavita was mediocre). The weather was just fine during the game. The QB play was not. And if not for Baldwin, the final score would have been ugly. I remember thinking: "if Luck wasn't inserted in this game, when will he be?" I'm pretty sure the family decided to RS after this game - in other words, Luck should have been in play that day.
