That far-off wailing sound in the night?? - Redrum - 06-16-2010

Yvonne as her World Cup bracket took a Swiss torpedo.  Beat Spain 1-0.  Favored Spain not out of it but in the modern game a first-round loser has never made it to hold the Cup.

And, yes,  I did watch the second half.  Did other stuff but mostly watched.  Tense game.   If it had been baseball,  I would have done other stuff and gone to bed.

Re: That far-off wailing sound in the night?? - Canalejas - 06-16-2010

When Spain had that rocket bounce off the crossbar you just knew it wasn\'t their night.  It was awesome.  Most US soccer fans may have cheered against England extra hard at least in part because of that colonial relationship.  I got to feel a little of that today (I\'m Mexican).  Up tomorrow:  an actual Match against another foreign occupier, France.  Vamos, el Tri!

That Swiss goal was the kind of score that could only be described as Taj Finger-esque.  Pure never-quit on the part of the Swiss scorer, who chased down the ball around and over at least two or three fallen players for what was basically a good put-back.

How do you know this?  You couldn\'t have been watching the World Cup is boring.  Football is boring except as played by little kids.

That goal by Fernandes reminded me a lot of Charlie Davies\'s goal against England in last year\'s Confederations Cup. A real tragedy what happened to Davies--I bet if Davies plays instead of Findley we beat the redcoats.

Now, Yvonne.  Go back and read my posts - Redrum - 06-17-2010

I said BASEBALL was boring compared to soccer.  And yes,  I do believe soccer is a better game,  more fun,  to play than to watch.

Since kids have much more opportunity to play when compared to the lives adults live,  it is by definition and by sheer number of participants, a kids\' game.  Most are.

And I\'ll even make this peace offering:   I\'m not pulling against England because of their colonial past with us (as asserted above).  I even like the "English" emphasis, displaying only the cross of St. George.  Screw those guys from Wales and Scotland.

And, Yvonne, as a peace offering ... - Redrum - 06-17-2010

Somebody who takes...well, actually, took the game as seriously as you do.

And France goes down! Domenech further demonstrates his own ineptitude, and the ineptitude of his superiors for keeping him around.

Re: That far-off wailing sound in the night?? - washingtonismoney - 06-17-2010

Domenech is so incompetent they\'ve already hired his replacement. They had him hired before the World Cup even started.

Now, you ask, why couldn\'t they just replace him before the World Cup? Well, that\'s France.

Re: That far-off wailing sound in the night?? - washingtonismoney - 06-18-2010

U.S. is still in good shape, I\'d say. Let\'s say England beats Algeria (safe assumption, that). That means ENG 4/SLV 4/US 2/ALG 0. The U.S. then has to beat Algeria by more than one goal to assure advancement; fewer than that and we\'re hoping for an outright win by one side or another.

But let\'s say it\'s a draw. That means SLV 4/US 2/ENG 2/ALG 0. Slovenia might bunker for the draw against England in this scenario, but all that means is that the U.S. has to win. Should the U.S. tie and ENG tie in that scenario, well then I believe it\'s determined by who has scored the most goals.

If Algeria pulls off the upset of the tournament, that means SLV 4/ALG 3/US 2/ENG 1. Then the U.S. has to win, and will be guaranteed entrance with one.

All the U.S. has to do is win, and Algeria has looked pretty awful so far.

I think the US is looking to declare war against Mali if they don\'t advance...

We\'re not at war with Mali now? Are you sure? I can\'t keep track.

Know Your Wars: If U.S. not using predator drones. - Redrum - 06-18-2010

then apparently it doesn\'t qualify as a "war".   Unpleasantness perhaps, but if the boys flying the drones out at Nellis AFB, Nevada don\'t know where it is,  might as well not exist.

I\'ve heard that to save costs the drone pilots now work out of their home offices one or two days a week.  That way they can watch the World Cup between missle strikes.  In their pajamas, of course.

Re: That far-off wailing sound in the night?? - washingtonismoney - 06-18-2010

Sobering fact about those predator drone pilots: they have a higher suicide rate than the army in general. No easy job, apparently.

Re: That far-off wailing sound in the night?? - dabigv13 - 06-18-2010

Well if any of those drone pilots were soccer fans, a certain ref\'s house might not be there when he gets home.

Re: That far-off wailing sound in the night?? - washingtonismoney - 06-18-2010

The ENG-ALG tie was the perfect result for the U.S. Now a win of any sort advances the U.S., and certain ties advance the U.S.: if the U.S. ties and ENG-SLV ends in a tie, then England would have to get two more goals than the U.S. So things are looking up.

And if and 13 to 16 year olds were soccer fans, you would get this

Don\'t worry. The US will get through.  The US and Slovenia will get through. Â
