RE: Stanford at the US Amateur - winflop - 08-09-2021

Thorbjornsen -5 T5
Ng -1 T29
Shimp +6 T222

Menon +7 T259
Tuleubayev +13 T305

Second stroke play round tomorrow. Current cut is at +1

They are playing two courses and Thorbjornsen & Ng played the easier one today so both will need to play well tomorrow to make the cut. Shimp & Menon could make the cut if they play well tomorrow. Tuleubayev should just enjoy the scenery tomorrow before heading out

RE: Stanford at the US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-09-2021

Scoring average for Long Vue Club (which Ng and Thorbjornsen played) - 71.66

Scoring average for Oakmont (which Shimp, Menon and Tuleubayev played) - 76.75

As I type this, 44 golfers are under par. 43 of them played Long Vue.

Yeah, Shimp and Menon are not out of it. And Ng has his work cut out for him. Thorbjornsen has a bit of a cushion. But numbers on Oakmont can get big in a hurry.

RE: Stanford at the US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-11-2021

Qualifying was delayed by weather. It finished this morning.

Thorbjornsen was tied for the medal until his final hole at Oakmont which he double bogeyed. He will be seeded 3rd when match play begins.

Shimp put together a solid round at Long Vue. He was above the cut line through 16 holes then bogeyed 17. But a clutch birdie on 18 got him into the match play field. He shot 67 today.

Menon also played well for much of his round at Long Vue. He was 5 under through 15 holes and above the cut line. But he finished bogey, bogey, bogey to miss the cut.

Ng playing at Oakmont was also above the cut line through 15 holes. But he bogeyed 16 and 18 and will miss match play.

After an 83 on Monday at Oakmont, Tuleubayev shot 70 at Long Vue.

RE: Stanford at the US Amateur - bbm233 - 08-12-2021

In the first round of match play completed this morning (matches were delayed due to weather):
Henry Shimp lost 2 and 1. He was playing from behind most of the match but had tied it up on 15. He then lost 16 (he bogeyed) and 17 (opponent birdied). BTW, does anybody know if he is pulling an Anna Wilson and coming back for a 6th year?

Michael Thorbjornsen won his match 2 and 1. He also was playing from behind most of the match, but birdied 5 holes in a row to go from 3 down to his 2 and 1 margin of victory. Wow!

Thor is currently 1 up early in his second round of match play.

Thorbjornsen's 5 hole run was the best stretch of play in the tournament to date by anyone. Really impressive. Enjoy this video, especially the 4 iron he stings from 227 yards at the 16th hole. No pro would have done it better.

AND ... He hit the flag pole from a bunker to preserve his birdie putt on 17!  Wow.

I encourage folks to watch the short video linked by Spiny ... it's fun.

His opponent did not look too happy during the handshake after the flag-hit-helping-birdie on 17.  Actually, I'm just surmising that because it looked like the world's fastest "handshake," especially in golf.  It may have been a fly by fist bump!  Whatever.  Congrats to Thor.

Looks like he will have to play a Heck of a finish first thing tomorrow to move on, though…

Hulk, not sure what videos you are trying to open. The tweet above has embedded photos, not videos.

The last paragraph of the schedule announcement is the first confirmation I have seen that Shimp is returning for a 6th year. This is a really nice development for Coach Ray and Stanford golf. Shimp had a strong finish to the season last spring. He was 6th at Pasatiempo and then tied for the medal at the P12s, but lost in a playoff.

Coach Ray told me a couple weeks ago but asked me to keep it under wraps. With the whole roster back and a full year of coaching i think the team has some solid upside potential. Thorbjornsen & Brown are probably the best two players but Shimp could contend at the top

In the most recent WAGR: #27- Thorbjornsen, #40- Brown, #50- Fillips, #220- Ng, #237- Shrimp, #283- Yang(incoming FR), #445- Beber-Frankl, #497-  Tuleubayev (all top 500). Would love to see another top 50 for 2022.

RE: Stanford at the US Amateur - winflop - 08-23-2021

That'd be great I don't know what the pipeline looks like. However, Stanford is now hosting at least two significant junior tournaments every year, which gives the programs more exposure by having juniors play the course and the coaches more opportunities to more easily see prospects

If they play like their rankings this year, then having Shimp as #5 is a good indicator of a very successful season. He played #3/4 two years ago when they won it all. The team will have depth this year - but it also needs good play from the top end. We got that from Wu and Salinda two years ago. BTW, Nate Menon is #599, but I would rate him higher than a couple of the other guys listed based on performance at the end of 2021.

P.S. congrats to Brandon Wu for getting his PGA tour card for the upcoming season!
