Good for her! I would imagine we'll see Regan Smith ink some impressive deals for herself soon, too.

Ahh, I'd missed that Smith had signed with Speedo. Thanks, Bob!

I know there will be other deals for the both of them coming, but I would also guess they'll be several orders of magnitude lower than what, say, Missy Franklin could have gotten after the London Olympics or what Katie Ledecky could have gotten after Rio (or more to the point, before Rio, when it was clear she was the most dominant female swimmer on the planet and brands would've wanted to capitalize on interest during the games). Neither Smith nor Huske is a "breakout star" of the sort that could get, say, Rolex or other luxury brand deals in addition to swimming-specific brands. Anyone have a sense of the numbers we're talking for the Huske or Smith deals? I'm glad they're getting whatever they're getting, to be clear, but I'm curious about what the numbers look like in this new NIL era. (FWIW, Smith has ~77K followers on Instagram and Huske has ~16K, which will surely factor into the values of whatever NIL deals they sign.)

Those numbers would be bigger for Smith if the Tokyo Olympics had taken place as originally scheduled, I think. She'd just set world records in the 100 and 200 back at the 2019 worlds (shattering the record in the 200), and she just wasn't reaching those same times this year. Obviously, covid messed with everyone's training, but it seemed to knock her off her trajectory a bit more than some others. But if she'd won the 100/200 double in Tokyo and added some more relay medals and something in the 200 fly as well, then that's an appreciably larger chunk of change coming her way.

Just three years before Paris, though, so both could parlay success there to bigger NIL deals, if they even want to stay in college. But with NIL deals now available, the lure of professional swimming over college would seem to get smaller. Sure, you'll still see those in the mix for medals take an Olympic year off to focus their training on that, but is the professional swimming circuit all that lucrative? I've always assumed that the real money to be made as a swimmer is off endorsement deals, but I suppose it's like any other sport--that may well be true for the elite, but for the merely very good, the endorsement dollars just aren't enough. Interested to see how the relatively new International Swimming League plays out. (Here's a SwimSwam article about the 2019 season where it looks like just one swimmer made north of $100K and just two over $60K--but at least it's a revenue source for swimmers that didn't exist before: https://swimswam.com/sarah-sjostrom-tops-isl-season-prize-money-list-with-139-7k-earnings/) But if the league grows, swimmer income should, too--apparently the league has promised a 50-50 split with swimmers.
