football camp notes from gostanford - 82lsju - 08-17-2021

Quote:The September 4 contest against Kansas State in Arlington, Texas, begins at 9 a.m. PDT. In early starts in the past – notably a 2009 contest at Wake Forest and the 2015 opener at Northwestern, both losses – the team woke early and practiced early to acclimate.

"We've done that in the past and it's never worked," said David Shaw, Stanford's Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football. "So, we're never going to do that again."

Rather than shifting practice times, "We're not going to change our schedule at all," he said. "And we're not going to go two days early. We're going to go one day early. Let them build up as much sleep as possible."

Guess we'll see how that works out for the team.

Yes, I hope it's not going too far to the opposite extreme. It probably does make sense not to get up super early for a pregame practice.

RE: football camp notes from gostanford - BostonCard - 08-17-2021

Interesting; my solution would have been to give the team more time to adjust (especially since it is before school starts), but hope I'm wrong.

I thought the problem at Northwestern was they got the team up at something like 4:30 a.m.  to get in all the usual meetings and pregame preparation that they do for other games (didn't want to change the "routine"). I hope they move most of that stuff to the evening before so they can sleep longer

RE: football camp notes from gostanford - martyup - 08-17-2021

They should do the pre-game face slap.  Pair off and see how hard you can slap the face of your partner.  This really wakes you up and gets you ready to kick azz.

I kind of like this idea. When I was young, I used to have difficulty sleeping in hotels. So, I think this approach is interesting -- just accept the fact that you'll get one night's bad sleep, but try to limit it to just that one night.

Note that the coach is implicitly acknowledging how problematic it is to schedule cross-country trips during the season, yet we keep doing this. This isn't even the only one this year -- the team flies cross-country for Vanderbilt also. Maybe the SEC Network will be sneaky and schedule it as a 6AM game.

My recollection is that many 18 & 19 year old students have *never* stayed in a hotel before. So I wonder if the team will be a better road team this year because they got used to living out of a hotel last year.

But with the 9AM KState game, there are risks no matter what you try. If you don't have a walkthrough before the game, the play could be particularly sloppy, especially during the first half, and during the first game of the year, with a new quarterback and a new center.

It could be an ugly, sloppy game.

Good practice for them. Gets them ready for the 0800 Eastern pre-meeting meetings they will have to attend later in life.

Forty years ago, a Stanford footballer told me that one of the keys to playing well on Saturday was to get a good night's sleep at home on Thursday. His logic was that it's not too hard to function on one night of poor sleep, but it's a different story with two consecutive nights of poor sleep. And this applied to both home and road games, because the team was staying at (I think) Hyatt Rickey's before home games, but adrenalin made it difficult to sleep anywhere the night before a game.

I have no idea if that philosophy is medically sound, but it looks like Shaw is willing to give it a try.

Also, flying commercial from SFO/SJC to DFW--just under 4 hours non-stop--is a heck of a lot easier than travelling from SFO/SJC to MHK--between 6 and 7 hours with a layover in Dallas. So the players get a good night's sleep in their home beds on Thursday with a reasonable 7 am wakeup call on Friday, board a late-morning flight and arrive into Dallas in the late afternoon. Check in to the hotel, eat dinner, do your walk-throughs and turn in for the night and set the alarm for a 6 am (4 am body-clock time) wakeup on Saturday. I guess that works?

Team flies charter so would have been a non-stop flight to MHK.

I'm thinking this strategy is similar to when teams play at altitude. Either you go several days in advance to acclimatize or just show up as close to game time as possible and tough it out before you realize what's hit you.

I gotta drive from Dallas to Arlington for the game that morning, not sure why Shaw is bitching.

Hotels are expensive.

Forget Eastern; you should try working at a company headquartered in Switzerland (CET, 9 hours ahead of PST).

Got any great chocolate or watches BC?

Yes, they used to give us Laderach gift baskets as a welcome gift for our visits to Basel.  I do have a nice Swiss watch, but it was a gift from my father-in-law, not my employer.

LOL, I just found out that they are opening a Laderach store in the Stanford shopping center.  Maybe the company will switch to giving us watches now that we can get the chocolate locally.  Not.

Valid point. In person meetings haven't been common for a while, so the travel option is off the table I would imagine. That has been true for me. One of my main customers is in Italy.  Another is in Australia. The good news is that it takes a while to get to both places, so you can sleep on the plane and land at a reasonable time to go to work. The bad news is the dreaded "third day syndrome" when the adrenaline wears off.
