What happens when Stanford cuts a sport - BobK - 08-28-2021

Then brings it back. I hope this is the worst case
Field Hockey lost their first game 1-0 to cal last night. Stanford has only 13 on their roster and no goalie and just one Frosh.
Talk about rebuilding

Bobbbb if I didn’t know you I would think that they played with no goalie. Still scored only one goal against so Cal must really shoot badly. LOL.

The story says they played without a goalie as in no goalie.

Any other school could fill the gap with transfers.

In fact, some G5 and FCS schools are signing classes with more transfers than freshmen now. Texas State signed almost entirely transfers, and ECU signed 15 transfers (including Juco) and 9 freshmen.

One of those 13 should suit up in the cage. Wonder why not,

The roster shows 13 players, none listed as goalie.  In the previous year, there were 18 players, including one goalie (a Junior).
Go back two years, there were 23 players, including two goalies.

All 13 would have to be pretty good athletes. An athlete can block shots...just sayin...not that I would want to do it.

knowing little to nothing about field hockey it might be a tactical decision to have 3 subs instead of just 2 for the 10 field players

Men's volleyball has a pretty full complement of 18 players.  There were 17 in 2019 and 21 in 2011.

Earning its first win of the season, and the first win of the Roz Ellis era, Stanford field hockey (1-2) scored four times in the second half to topple Dartmouth (1-2), 4-1, on Monday at the Varsity Turf.

Stanford outshot the Big Green by a 22-1 margin despite playing without a goalkeeper for the third consecutive game. After a scoreless first half, Reinhart opened the scoring when she tipped a shot from Sambeth just under five minutes into the third quarter

I know nothing about field hockey and didn't watch any of the games, but thinking in terms of soccer and hockey, it's really amazing to me that playing the whole game without a goalie works better than moving someone who is normally a field player to goalie. Evidently it can work, though!

what would happen if Stanford cut an AD?  Would anybody notice?

If they went to the AD's farewell party, yes. Otherwise, no.
