Decision Day: Will he or won't he? -
CardinalSagehen - 08-29-2021
Shaw has pointed to tomorrow, Monday of game week, as the time when he would announce the QB starter for the first game. Since then, he has given no indications of who is ahead, if anyone. Which option will he choose?:
a) Not announce either starter tomorrow or during the usual Tuesday press conference, despite what he has said previously (this would amount to an "OR" on the depth chart and no clarification in the press conference)
b) Announce West, with McKee getting significant playing time
c) Announce McKee, with West getting significant playing time
d) Announce West outright
e) Announce McKee outright
For me, it's between b and c; I am leaning that he will go with c, but b would not surprise me. I would be slightly more surprised by d or e at this point. Thoughts?

I fear a) OR - but to be honest I don't feel I have much of a read on this. I am hoping that McKee gets the nod but my knowledge of either QB is pretty limited beyond looking at recruiting information. I know West didn't have a great time last year but seems like difficult situation for him to play - does anyone have a clearer idea of the relative strengths and weaknesses of West and McKee at this point e.g. accuracy, arm strength, mobility etc.
I am hopeful that the run game gives up a great foundation and that neither QB is asked to carry the offence especially early in the season.

Amen to that.
From the KState review posted in another thread, it sounds like our defense may be the one facing the bigger test on Saturday anyway.
I'll keep an open mind on the QB situation and trust Shaw. I think this coaching staff has shown to be good and fair at selecting the team that gives us the better chance.

I'm hoping for e but expecting c.

“Both guys are going to play, but XXX is going to start. XXX is doing a great job at the line of scrimmage, getting us to the right plays, directing the protections, executing all aspects of the offense.”

Has McKee mastered the snap and handoff yet? Will he ever be in the T?

Nice. That is a good rendition of Shaw. Your script would suggest option (b), based on his prior comments about each of the guys. If he goes with (c ) or (e), the script would be more about the added dimension of athleticism that McKee brings and Shaw would say that both guys are getting us into the right plays at the line, etc.
McKee has the physical attributes of Justin Herbert, or is at least close. It’s hard not to roll the dice on him.

guess the answer is "a", at least if today's depth chart is an indication. We'll see what tomorrow's press conference brings.

Wow. I look forward to the "explanations" at tomorrow's presser
He'd have been better off saying "I'll name a starter when one emerges, whether that's tomorrow or 5 minutes before kickoff."

So, in the end, it was ( a ) and then ultimately ( b ). Not very surprising.
