Appears that McGill is still on the mend since he is not listed on the two deep for the free safety position.

So Sam who plays nickel?

DL depth a big issue. LaBounty, backing Johnson, is a walk on.

What’s happened to Andres Fox? Flashed a big push a few years ago and appears to have flattened out. So did Umeroh but he’s retired.

Add to the above #28 Turner-Muhammad who started 5 games last year at CB, but did not participate in the spring game (I think) nor #24 Toomer who missed all of last year with an injury (a CB) and #0 LB DiCosmo.

If the ac breaks down in Jerry's stadium and it gets hot, I we may see how the collection of true freshman d-line perform.  Maybe it is for the better that the game is a bit on the early side.

RE: Depth chart vs KSU - JustAnotherFan - 08-31-2021

Question: Did prior depth charts have two Tight End positions on it? Seems like a new thing.

Question: Is this depth chart the most California-centric (hometown) in the Harbaugh-Shaw era? Seems very California heavy, especially given how much Stanford has emphasized its nationwide recruiting reach over the past decade.

I wondered the same about the two tight ends, not that I remember. Hope it's a good omen.
On California centric, I just looked at it and found about 80% out of state. Sounds pretty diverse and in line with the last 20 years or so.

This is really not good news.

That roof better stay open -- at least let a bit of virus out.

Should only be around 99 by the second half...

I guess I was focused on the skill positions on offense. 10/18.

Looking at a few depth charts in 2020 they had 3 WR and 1 TE, in 2019 and 2018 2 WR and 1 TE

that's kind of bad.

RE: Depth chart vs KSU - 81alum - 09-01-2021

I've never been one to follow the depth charts, nor am I as active and knowledgeable a football fan as many of you.  However, as I look over this chart, I find it absolutely remarkable how few names I recognize.  Probably because I "checked out" during COVID, but the combination of the fact that it has been two years since I attended a game, plus the fact that I seldom paid attention to backups even then, make it such that I recognize fewer than half a dozen names.  West I remember from his disastrous play as a backup in one game, Booker I remember, Kelly I remember as a back that was streaky in his performances, and then some familiar names on the line.  That is it.  The fault could me my own, but it is hard for me to be filled with confidence.

For many, it may be that they have been injured for so long that we just haven't seen them play.

Another observation is there are no non-kicker freshmen in the two deep ? Primarily a good sign, but have we heard of any that have surprised and are pushing for significant playing time? Shaw seems to have in recent  years become more comfortable with playing freshmen, particularly with the 3 or 4 game redshirt rule.

STM and McGill???? Jeeeez, starting  behind already. And Wilson!!! Three of our better
players. And, not alot behind any of them, especially the db's. This is a much bigger problem than not naming a starting QB.

Last year was his worst recruiting class by far, at least in terms of rating services. So maybe it is just a lack of talent.

Not to mention a staff lapse in recruiting. Oh, wait, Stanford recruits itself.

It's also possible that the pandemic disproportionately affected Stanford recruiting as students wanted to go to a school closer to home (especially if remote was a possibility), hurting a school known for its national recruiting more than other schools.  Add to it the inability to host students on campus and maybe we were at a bigger disadvantage than our competitors.

Of course, it is reasonable to think that a different staff might have compensated better; I think this staff can be rightfully criticized for being slow to adapt to the changing recruiting landscape.  Fortunately, they seem to have found their footing this year.
