Shaw's postgame comments - winflop - 09-05-2021

Shaw is either engaging in epic levels of spin or delusion...he and I saw VERY different games

RE: Shaw's postgame comments - Softball Fan - 09-05-2021

For the most part I thought his comments were reasonable and fairly accurate.  What do you expect him to say?   These guys that play for me are a bunch of losers and really stunk up the field?

RE: Shaw's postgame comments - BostonCard - 09-05-2021

I think some people want Shaw to self-flagellate, but they don’t realize that that’s not the purpose of a press conference.  The purpose (at least from most coaches perspective) is to basically say as little as possible, and make as few headlines as possible.

[Rant On/]  Personally, I'd want him to express a higher level of concern that the program he leads has gone 9-11 over its last 20 games.  I'd want him to talk about getting a much more experienced and creative offensive coordinator. I'd want him to question if his system is too complicated to get the most out of talented young players (it is).  I'd want him to acknowledge what we all saw -- that Tanner should have started the game judged by both the eye test and statistics.  Every play works every time if everyone 'executes' perfectly.  And sure, that works to some extend when you have Andrew Luck, or Christian McCaffery, or Bryce Love -- but Stanford doesn't have those guys, so blaming things on poor execution is just exhausting.   Sure, guys missed blocks, missed coverage, missed throws, etc., etc. -- all things to work on in practice, no question.  But it's college football, so that will always be part of the deal.  Shaw's a smart guy.  He needs to stop convincing himself that everything is fine the way it is. Great coaches adapt and evolve. They put the untested freshman QB's in the National Championship Game when the senior isn't working.  They overhaul the assistant coach staff.  Shaw needs to wake up and smell the coffee or he'll be an ESPN commentator before much longer.  [/Rant off]

I expect a little more realism and I hope that this is spin. If it's not spin, the program is in even worse shape than I fear it is.

exactly, hopefully he follows the "praise in public, criticize on private" method

You really expect him to say this in a press release?  I agree about both those points but there is no way I would expect a coach to say this in a public press interview.

RE: Shaw's postgame comments - martyup - 09-05-2021

This first thing I heard him say was something to the effect of "This is on my shoulders."  So, blame him for the sucky performance of our team, but don't say he didn't take responsibility.

Shaw has been blaming execution for losses ever since the hair pulling loss to OKAY St in the Fiesta Bowl.

He is consistent.

Breaking news . . . football game losses are always due to poor execution by the loser.

Yes!  In more breaking news, Brian Kelly is also in favor of execution. He is so committed to the pursuit of execution that he wants to EXECUTE his entire team after tonight's WIN.

Do we have too many steak eaters on the field and on the coaching staff?

+1, this.

It's like the coach's comments at halftime during a football game. The reporter needs to ask, why are things going poorly. What do you plan to do differently in the second half?

Now, the coach may know why things are going poorly. The coach may have corrections he's going to give to his players at halftime. The coach may have all kinds of surprises planned for the second half.

But do you really think the coach should tell you what they're thinking? Do you expect them to? If the truth was that they had a bunch of new plays they've been saving that they think will be very successful in the first half, should they announce to the reporter what to expect in the second half?

The typical answer is they don't need to do anything differently, they just need to follow their game plan better.

"We just need to execute better," is Coach Shaw's version. And, being as vague and harmless as possible, it's true.

"We just need to execute better, and that responsibility falls first and foremost to me and my coaching staff."

"I was surprised by how poorly our running game was tonight. 38 yards on 22 carries isn't getting the job done. We need to do better."

"I'm proud of the way our defense played in the second half. We made some adjustments at halftime and they seemed to work well."

The part that I find most delusional is his discussion of the QB performances. Spin can't fix the reality that McKee was head & shoulders better than West, which was a pretty low bar. I'd rather he not go into depth on it, because it makes him look like he isn't seeing things for what they are. I'm not expecting him to throw West under the bus, but something like "Jack seemed to struggle tonight, but I'll wait until we see and study the film."

What nobody is saying... In terms of talent Stanford gradually has sunk to depths we haven't seen since 2006.

You get to the heart of the problem: recruiting, recruiting, recruiting.  Recruit substantially better players and most of fans' complaints will fade into the background as the team wins.

I wonder how much is a lack of raw talent and how much our guys just don't have the system, development, training, or whatever to look good. :(  I suspect some of both.  Harbaugh found young talent for the 2007 season, sure, but many many of the same guys looked a heck of a lot better in 2007 than 2006....

RE: Shaw's postgame comments - oldguy - 09-06-2021

I don’t have the stats, but it seems that losses are much more frequent than wins in the central and eastern time zones unless the team has a week to adjust.
How about a Stanford in Texas and Georgia/Florida campus?

Recruiting, skill development, and strength & conditioning. I highly doubt Ben Gardner would have become an NFL-quality player without Hart & Turley (one of multiple examples).

A buddy told me that Turley has landed at Colorado.  So watch out for them.

Quote:Turley, 43, has long been considered as one of the nation’s top strength coaches.  In 12 years at Stanford under head coaches Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw, the Cardinal won three Pac-12 titles, earning five New Year’s Six bowl berths, with 42 players drafted into the NFL, 10 of those going on to earn Pro Bowl status...

At Stanford, he was renowned for his innovate approach to strength training, which included many more components than just weights and conditioning.  Integral parts of his program included sports nutrition education, lifestyle management and sports psychology programming, all of which ensured the optimal physical and mental preparation of Stanford’s athletes. He was also responsible for planning meals for the program’s training table, travel and game days to guarantee optimal nutrition and hydration.  He also collaborated with the sports medicine staff to develop an individualized, sport and position specific, active integration rehabilitation plan to ensure the successful return to competition of all injured players.

It all added up to a creative and comprehensive player development program designed to achieve three primary goals: injury prevention, athletic performance enhancement and mental discipline development.
