RE: WBB: Pac 12 Preview:Cal - CompSci87 - 09-18-2021

It seems like things are still tough at Cal. I wonder if the turnover in assistants is good or bad. Having no ranked recruits makes it hard to compete in the Pac-12, unless some of them turn out to be unappreciated gems.

*April Phillips is now at Texas. She went back to Arizona for one day and then jumped over to Texas.

Karisma Ortiz out for the season with a left knee injury. Yikes. As if this team hasn’t had enough injury problems.

RE: WBB: Pac 12 Preview:Cal - joemontes - 10-30-2021

I did some research regarding the current roster of Cal, and found out that their freshman PG 5'6 Jayda CURRY is the 2021 MaxPrep California POY after she led Centennial (Corona) to the Southern California championship over Mater Dei (who were led by Stanford freshman Brooke DEMETRE).  I watched that game online and she was sensational!  She averaged 21.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 5.1 apg and 3.9 spg
as a senior, leading Centennial in all those statistical categories.

Amazingly, she is VASTLY UNDER THE RADAR as she is not even listed as a player in ESPN Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation. However, her teammate 5'5 PG Londynn JONES is #22 overall in ESPN Hoopgurlz and #20 overall in ASGR Class of 2022. The question is....WHY does she not even exist in the world of ESPN Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation???  I think Jayda CURRY might just be a wonderful surprise for Cal and to us WBB fans who just focus on players who are billed as Top 100 recruits by ESPN Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation.

RE: WBB: Pac 12 Preview:Cal - joemontes - 10-30-2021

Cal landed an ESPN Hoopgurlz Top 10 Recruiting Class for 2020, featuring FOUR (4) Top 100 recruits:

#13  -  6'3    Dalayah DANIELS
#35  -  6'3    Ugonne ONYIAH
#51  -  6'4    Fatou SAMB
#89  -  6'8    Sela HEIDI

The problem was, when those FOUR (4) Top 100 recruits (and all are post players) came in to play during their freshman season last year, there was literally no reliable guard play (because of covid) outside of their starting PG 5'5 Leilani McINTOSH so, as a result, their outside shooting was virtually nonexistent. The top returning scorers and outside shooters (who are both guards) from the previous season, namely 5'11 Jazlen GREEN (2nd leading scorer at 8.8 ppg and leading 3-point shooter) and 5'9 Cailyn CROCKER (7.5 ppg and 3rd leading 3-point shooter), did not suit up last season, but thankfully will resume their collegiate basketball careers this season.

The return of GREEN and CROCKER, plus the addition of Harvard transfer 5'11 Jadyn BUSH and the resumption of the covid affected freshman seasons of 5'11 Alma ELSNITZ and ASGR Class of 2021 #88 overall 5'11 Mia MASTROV, should stabilize Cal's guard/wing play.  And returning starting PG McINTOSH will be backed up by a very promising freshman PG Jayda CURRY (whose being VASTLY UNDER THE RADAR I explained in a previous discussion).

Projected Starting Line-up:
*********************
F  -  6'3    Dalayah DANIELS         So
F  -  6'3    Ugonna ONYIAH          So
G  -  5'11  Jazlyn GREEN               RS So
G  -  5'9    Cailyn CROCKER          RS So
PG -  5'5    Lailani McINTOSH      Jr

or

F  -  6'2    Evelien LUTJE SCHIPHOLT
                                                       Jr
F  -  6'3    Dalayah DANIELS         So
F  -  6'3    Ugonna ONYIAH          So
G  -  5'11  Jazlyn GREEN              RS So
PG -  5'5   Lailani McINTOSH       Jr

Other Regular Rotation Players:
*************************
F  -  5'11   Jadyn BUSH                Gr/RS Jr
C  -  6'4     Fatou SAMB               So
C  -  6'8     Sela HEIDI                  So
G  -  5'11   Alma ELSNITZ            RS Fr
G  -  5'11   Mia MASTROV           Fr
PG -  5'6    Jayda CURRY              Fr

That's 3 Juniors, 6 Sophomores, and 3 Freshmen for your regular rotation, a really young team....

Cal beat Westmont after trailing at the half on Thursday night. Their Frosh Curry scored 23. I’m not impressed

At least someone above sounds correct re Curry.

Not impressed with Curry or not impressed with Cal in general?

RE: WBB: Pac 12 Preview:Cal - Lorcan - 10-30-2021

The slightly alarming factor is that Dalayah Daniels didn't even start against Westmont. Has she really regressed that far in one year?

RE: WBB: Pac 12 Preview:Cal - joemontes - 11-06-2021

Cal routed St Martin's 79-32 in their 2nd exhibition game.

Freshman Jayda CURRY led the Bears again in scoring with 20 pts and, this time, Delayah DANIELS came to life with 18 pts, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks, after scoring only 2 pts in their anemic win vs Westmont.

I'm puzzled with Charmin SMITH's starting line-up consisting of 5'5 McINTOSH, 5'6 CURRY, 5'9 CROCKER, 5'11 BUSH and 6'2 LUTJE SHIPHOLT for both games.  Is it because both Westmont and St Martin's are undersized?

In those 2 exhibition games, CURRY averaged 21.5 ppg while shooting 57.1% FG (16/28 FG), 50.0% 3 PT (4/8 3 PT) and 100% FT (7/7 FT).  Seems like the coaching staff is relying heavily on this VASTLY UNDER THE RADAR undersized freshman SG/PG.  Let's see if she can continue this torrid shooting when they formally commence their OOC schedule next week, beginning with Sacramento State on Nov 9, San Francisco on Nov 12, Utah State on Nov 16 and UC San Diego on Nov 20.  I will watch the Cal live stream of their home games against Sacramento State and Utah State, primarily because I am very intrigued by this very talented freshman who is literally deemed as non-existent by ESPN Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation, even after she led her Centennial HS to win the 2021 Southern California HS championship (over Mater Dei who was spearheaded by Stanford freshman Brooke DEMETRE) and was named 2021 MaxPreps POY for California.

RE: WBB: Pac 12 Preview:Cal - joemontes - 11-14-2021

After leading Cal with 23 pts and 20 pts in their 2 exhibition games, 5'6 freshman Jayda CURRY continues her sensational scoring spree, pouring in 23 pts (9/22 FG, 3/6 3pt FG, 2/2 FT) to lead Cal to a 90-71 win over Sacramento State in their official opener last Tuesday (Nov 9).

Then she scored another team-leading 27 pts (7/12 FG, 2/3 3pt FG, 11/13 FT) in Cal's 70-41 rout of San Francisco yesterday (Nov 13).

Looks like Coach Charmin SMITH is relying heavily on CURRY, as shown by her team-leading  36.5 minutes/game and 25.0 ppg after 2 games.  For me, this is simply amazing, considering that Jayda was totally snubbed by ESPN Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation.  I will continue to root for this kid...

RE: WBB: Pac 12 Preview:Cal - BobK - 11-14-2021

Curry’s final 5 were cal, Washington, Utah, SD State and ASU. 4.5 GPA in HS
