game on ABC

Impressive. Let's hope we do something this week to make ABC be even happier about their bet.
Over the last 20 years, I'm pretty sure the outcome of this game has kept one of the two teams from reaching a playoff or national championship game about 5 times. That alone makes it deserving of the spot.

I had been thinking that a matchup of 3-1 Stanford and 4-0 Oregon (not tempting the woofing gods here) might tempt Game Day to come west of the Mississippi. But then I realized that the game is at Stanford and I am sure the powers-that-be on campus would not welcome such a carnival during this public health crisis. And I would agree with that decision. Regardless, given the high-profile time slot, I am sure this selection will provide a lot of exposure. Does ABC provide regional coverage during this window, or will it be a national game?

Eric gets the info before anyone. He knew about this last year but the dope was embargoed.

First, let's hope Oregon doesn't blow it against 0-3 Arizona. It wouldn't quite be the greatest upset ever, but Oregon is a 28+ point favorite.
Yeah, we also have to do our part and beat UCLA, and I'm on record as saying that it will be an uphill climb.
Even if both of those happen, there will be #16 Arkansas at #2 Georgia, #13 Ole Miss at #1 Georgia, #4 Oklahoma at #25 Kansas State, and #8 Cincinnati at #12 Notre Dame. I think all of them would be more appealing to the good folks at ESPN than a match-up of #3 Oregon and (currently) unranked Stanford. I don't know that we'd be ranked after a win against UCLA given the scars from the K State game, and at most we'd be at the bottom of the top 25.
All of this is a long way of saying is that the odds of a 4-0 Oregon meeting a 3-1 Stanford would be less than 50:50, but even if it were to happen, the odds of that game being chosen for GameDay are pretty low.

Another road game for Stanford. Might as well paint the stadium green to make the Ducks feel even more at home.
I went to this game in 2019 and it was at least 2/3 Oregon fans in Stanford's stadium. One can only hope Stanford beats UCLA so Stanford's fair weather crowd at least shows. Otherwise, might be 3/4 Duck fans this year if they are still undefeated by then.

I'm just glad UCLA lost, as otherwise I'd be concerned about the crowd proportions this Saturday. I think fewer UCLA fans now will travel to Stanford, and I'm actually pretty hopeful that it will be a strong-ish (40k+) crowd rooting hard for the Card. That said, I can't help but think that a lot of Stanford fans won't show up because of the pandemic, a decision I completely respect.

A lot of fans won't show up because of the idiotic virtual-ticket-only policy. Every f-ing decision surrounding stadium access the past few years seems aimed directly at keeping folks away.

I doubt Game Day will be at a game not on an ESPN/ABC telecast so that means
#16 Arkansas at #2 Georgia, - possible, game is on ESPN at noon ET
#13 Ole Miss at #1 Georgia Alabama, - no, game is on CBS
#4 Oklahoma at #25 Kansas State, no, game is on FOX
#8 Cincinnati at #12 Notre Dame. - no, game is on NBC

Maybe it's subterfuge to keep visiting fans away? The thinking: If we make it almost impossible to get in the stadium, only die hard Stanford fans will bother trying to get it in!
I wonder if Oregon fans would try harder than Stanford fans to get in, tho...?

I assume they *want* to come out west at some point during the season - and Oregon would figure to be the focus from a football standpoint. The Ducks don't play USC this year, so it's either UO @ Stanford on Oct 2nd (if we beat UCLA), or it's UCLA @ UO on Oct 23 (if UCLA beats us this weekend and ASU the following weekend). I don't see any other likely options. Of course, they could just stay away.

Of the 8 teams playing in the 4 games on the big 4 broadcast networks at
at 12:30pm PT time slot, Stanford is the only team not currently ranked.
(Notre Dame game begins at 11:30am PT).

Well, the two best teams in California might be Fresno State and San Diego State. They play on October 30...
But talking Pac-12, I wouldn't write off USC just yet. Their remaining schedule is vs Oregon State, @ Colorado, vs Utah, @ Notre Dame, vs Arizona, @ ASU, @ Cal, vs UCLA, vs BYU.
If USC runs the table through the Notre Dame game, I could see the USC-ASU game on GameDay. Also, the USC-UCLA game on November 20, although I imagine there would be a lot of competitive games played that day. Maybe the BYU game on November 27, especially if BYU wins out until then. BYU's toughest remaining opponent--other than USC--just might be Utah State.

It is not a hard and fast rule that ESPN College Game Day goes to the site of a game broadcast by the ESPN family.
This week is a prime example: Chicago, the site of Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame. As a Wisconsin "home" game, the game is not on NBC but FOX. Yet, College Game Day will be in Chicago.
Whether that has any effect on the following week is open to speculation.

40K+ butts in the seats?? That would imply something like 25K-30K Bruin fans, which ain't gonna happen. Even if their team was Oregon-caliber, which it is clearly not. I say 32K tops this week with MAYBE slightly more Stanfordites than Bruins. You're overestimating the passion of "Cardinal Nation." Even at 2-1.

By 32K tops are you saying tickets sold or people actually there? I wouldn't expect 32K actually attending, but I will be one of those that do.

+1.
GameDay will never come to Stanford, especially in this Covid world.
In Nashville, the Covid "concerns" were almost impossible to discern in the city itself, and even at Vandy (though like Stanford, there is plenty of room to socially distance inside the stadium for fans). I watched a bit of the masses of people showing up for GameDay set on Saturday and at the White Outs in Happy Valley and Provo (and those aren't even SEC sites), and only one conclusion can be drawn: why ever go to Stanford?
It's just not happening.
