new stadium COVID verification process -
82lsju - 09-28-2021
most of you probably got the email from the AD about changes in the covid proof process for Saturday's game but for those who did not
Quote:To complete the verification process early on gameday, fans may visit a tent marked "COVID-19 Vaccine or Testing Verification" where they will present vaccine or testing documentation and a photo ID to receive a wristband that is unique to that event. Tents will open five hours prior to kickoff (7:30 AM for the Oct. 2 game) and close two hours prior to kickoff (10:30 AM for the Oct. 2 game).
Each stadium entry gate (gates 2, 4, 5, 10, and 12) will have a dedicated express line for fans who receive wristbands via the early verification process. The entrance to the express line will be marked by a tall flag that matches the color of the wristband for that game.
After the early verification tents close, fans will complete the verification process at the stadium entry gates (gates 2, 4, 5, 10, and 12), which open 90 minutes prior to kickoff (11 AM on Saturday).

I’m glad they are listening and trying to improve the process.
It sounds like it will definitely be better for people who tailgate and arrive 2+ hours before kickoff.
I worry that it will be worse for people who arrive closer to kickoff, which I think is the majority of the people. Reducing it to just 1 gate process closer to kickoff could avoid frustration by people who weren’t familiar with the process. But I have the feeling it could be worse for non-tailgaters like me.

Still a bit of a PITA, and I don't understand why people can't submit their verification in advance, with "clearance" displaying on the ticket.

well as one who arrived 2.5 hours before kickoff last game the vax proof line was less than 5 min long.
I would guess the number of people checking in at the vax tents from 7:30am-10:30am will be smaller than those checking in at the gates.
I think this response is to better accommodate relatively late arrivals.
What remains to seen is how many entry lines will be "express lines" for those who showed proof before arriving at the gates.
Last week at gate 10 half of the metal detector were not in use.
I would expect the new at the gate vax proof to be in front of the metal detectors and hopefully in front of the six not in use last week.

I see no way this will make things better and several ways it probably will make things worse. First, to be clear, it appears they are not opening any more gates, so we have the same number of entry gates. They are moving the verification location from the additional tents they have set up to the gates themselves two hours (90 minutes of operation) before the game starts. What they are doing is re-serializing the slow process of getting through the gates by putting another choke point in front of the gates. The big advantage of moving the metal detectors out well in front of the gates is that you now can have more metal detector lines than you have entry point at each gate. The metal detection (empty pockets/bags, walk through, refill pockets bags) is slower than reading your ticket, so you need more of it to maintain flow. Getting your COVID-19 vax status checked and showing your photo id is also much slower than just getting your ticket scanned. So, to maintain flow they are going to need lots more people in front of the gate doing the checks. Where will the people trying to get in line up? Not against the fence, because the entry is now 25 feet from there. It will be a unmitigated mess I expect. I think the previous system that kept the vax verification away from the gates was a good idea. IMHO this new approach will be a big regression resulting in gridlock at the gates.

This is where I would cut and past BC's link to the Goldblum line in Jurassic Park about the Athletic Department being so preoccupied with whether they could do vax testing pre-football game that "they didn't stop to think if they should."
Is the juice worth the squeeze here? [And btw, I'm on record as saying the squeeze wasn't that bad for UCLA - about 10 to 12 minutes and line moved fast. But I still have doubts about it being 'worth it.'].
RE: new stadium COVID verification process -
BostonCard - 09-28-2021
That's a good question, Teejers.
It's an outdoor event, so the risk of transmission is relatively low. OTOH, there are plenty of enclosed spaces, and, especially at halftime, they were crowded. I think there is a reasonable case to be made that there may be a fair amount of risk getting food at the concession stand during halftime (how much, I couldn't say without knowing the airflow in the mezzanine, which is not entirely enclosed).
I would say that I probably would not have gone had it not been for the mandate. I have an 9-year-old (and thus unvaccinated) daughter; I probably would feel different about taking her if it weren't a venue where almost everyone (except those under 12) were vaccinated/tested. In light of the fact that the game was televised, there is also the "is the juice worth the squeeze" where "the juice" is watching the game in person, and "the squeeze" is the worry about my kid catching COVID-19, even though her risk for serious illness is very low.
All told, I think insisting on vaccination/testing is a reasonable risk-reduction measure, though i have low confidence in that assessment because of unknowns on what the baseline risk is at Stanford stadium; it very well might be low enough that the juice is not worth the squeeze.
Separately from whether they should have instituted it, I think it was (here's that word again) executed well.

I'm with Goose in feeling this will be worse for those not coming more than 2 hours early to tailgate.

There will be fewer fans in attendance this Saturday, as compared to the UCLA game . . . right?
Think that will be a trend this whole season, until Notre Dame, when 1/2 of those in attendance will be rooting for the Irish.

Unfortunately, my recollection is that Oregon pulls a lot of fans, especially when their team is doing well.
So I think there will be a lot more Oregon fans this week than UCLA fans last week, and they will be loud.
As for Stanford fans, I don’t know. I only know that I will be there.

IMHO - There will be more fans.
UCLA had a mini-band, four cheerleaders, and a few hundred fans.
Oregon will be there in force. This Oregon team is oh so close to the CFP now. The game at Stanford and the game at UCLA are probably the two biggest challenges remaining on the schedule. So I would expect Oregon will bring a full band, their full collection of cheerleaders and loads of fans. As the State of Oregon has a similar vaxx or recent test scheme, the logistics at a less than capacity venue will just not be that daunting to them.
I have suspected the Stanford AD is not tracking vaccination status for privacy reasons. Those that start handling and storing medical information do have some duty to protect it even if they are not a health care organization. The political and legal pitfalls were probably too great to try that path. It would be nice for the USA to have a vaccine passport system like many other developed economies have created for their citizens, but that's a non-starter in the USA in 2021.
FWIW - I have always thought the 72 hour negative test concept is just crazy.
Imagine in a suspected DUI setting.
"Officer, 63 hours ago I successfully completed a sobriety test. So no need for a sobriety test now. Right ;)"
Sounds crazy... now imagine a comparable situation in our football game setting.
"Stadium entry staff, I have an uncontrollable cough and a fever of 101.5. But 63 hours ago I got a negative result on a COVID-19 test, so I can go to my seat now. Right ;)"

People who are concerned about lines at the gate have the option to arrive early, so this process gives the fans an option. It is your choice to arrive 30 minutes before the game.

I think OSU is a greater hurdle for Oregon's quest for the CFP than we are. OSU looks to be a tougher team, and because it is closer to the time when the committee meets, a loss against OSU would hurt them more.

Not always. For a 12:30 game, there are competing priorities, like kids' soccer. I mean, sure, it's my "choice", but not really.

and given the kick-off time I'd be willing to bet that the number of people checking in at the tents from 7:30am-9:30am is pretty small

From what i saw on Saturday, you could get through the covid verification process much quicker than the concession stand lines. I got through my vax line in 2 minutes an hour before kickoff. After waiting in line for 5 minutes at the concession stand, I gave up and went hungry for the rest of the game.

Not quite accurate. The previous system had the tents running for the entire time. I don't want to arrive at the game two or more hours in advance. I arrived last time 45 minutes before time and had no trouble. I spent 10 minutes in line and all was fine. The lines were well organized and were not constrained by the gate geometry. They were placed where there was room. It worked well, so I liked it. Frankly, I didn't expect to have it go that well. The organization was at a relatively high level compared to "normal Stanford".
Now, they are moving the entire operation and re-opening at the gates 90 minutes before kickoff. That MAY work fine, but they are now constrained by geometry. Are they going to have nice organized lines or will it be like it normally is trying to get in the gate, sort of a free for all with a bunch of people clustering around trying to get in? Maybe 45 minutes early will be fine, maybe it won't.

I don't expect there to be any slowdown from moving the vaccination check to the entry gates.
The main backup comes from the bag check/metal detectors, and a second backup from the ticket scanners. There is ample time to check vaccination status while waiting in those lines.

Hope you are correct, but IMHO it will be a significant added delay. The ticket scanners don't add much delay at all. Almost none unless there is somebody with an "issue". If there is a way that they can control access to the COVID-19screeening area, they can possibly match the speed of the metal detectors. To do that, they will need as many COVID points as they have metal detector points. I don't think there is room to do that. We shall see.

at gate 10 last week they were using only 6 of 12 metal detectors (no idea was the use rate was at other gates) so in theory they could double metal detector capacity with more people and have some number set aside for COVID screening (which seems like what they plan to do given they will have banners matching your wristband color for COVID proof "express lanes"
