So we don't get Utah on the road or OSU at home. Would it be that much more effort to have a full home-and-away round-robin schedule? Would eliminate the need for a Pac-12 tournament, which, in Stanford's case, would be a good thing...

Pac 12 tournament helps recruiting. As in we have this they don't. Teams want pre season games, and there's a limit on how many games can be played.

I thought the Pac-12 tournament helped make money. I didn't know about the recruiting angle. Why would a prospect care about the Pac-12 tournament? I don't recall the exact numbers, but my memory is that the Pac-12 tournament is not widely watched. Certainly not the early rounds, which are on the network-few-get.

Every major league has a league tournament. If one didn’t that would be a minus recruiting wise
I only go to the Women’s tournament and it’s very well attended. Pre Covid

RE: MBB conference schedule - Papa John - 09-30-2021

Well, there was no men's Pac-10 conference tournament from 1991 through 2001. The conference won men's national championships in 1995 (UCLA) and 1997 (Arizona). No national champions during the Pac-10 or Pac-12 conference tournament eras although there have been a number of final fours.

In any case, Stanford had no trouble recruiting from 1991 through 2001. Lots of success during that time that I don't need to detail to this audience with Stanford commits who had actionable offers from other major conference schools. I just don't believe that a boy's high school recruit would make a commitment that was based on whether or not a conference had a season-ending tournament. I would think that a bigger factor would be if the majority of regular season games are played on a channel that most folks can't get without making special arrangements.

But I know that it's ultimately a silly complaint of mine, because the conference tournament is here to stay. And if Stanford ever wins it, I'll be in favor, of course.

Actually Stanford won the NCAA just this past April.

And of course I support the women's conference tournament, because Stanford often wins it!

Seriously though, in 2020-21 pre-NCAA tournament the Stanford women were on national TV only four times out of 31 games, all on the ESPN network family. So having the Pac-12 conference tournament championship game actually made a difference in terms of national exposure, which, of course is woefully inadequate given the quality of the conference.

I agree with your argument that, for women's basketball, having the Pac-12 tournament increases national visibility for the conference and could, in some way, foster better recruiting.

I wonder if having the conference tournament in Las Vegas might be a recruiting draw.

RE: MBB conference schedule - Papa John - 09-30-2021

Las Vegas might be an attendance draw, but how is it a recruiting draw?

"Hey, Harrison, if you play at Stanford you'll get to play at least one game in March in Las Vegas on the Pac-12 network! And if we win two (or maybe three) games, you'll get to play on Fox on Saturday night!"

Here are the TV broadcasts for men's Pac-12 tournament games in 2019:
11 games total
3 on ESPN: 1 quarterfinal game at 8:30 pm PT, 1 semifinal game at 8:30 pm PT, championship game at 7:30 pm PT
All other games on the Pac-12 Network

And for the Big 12 2019 tournament:
9 games total
2 first-round games on ESPNU, 4 quarterfinal and both semifinal games on ESPN2, championship game at 5 pm CT on ESPN

B1G 2019 tournament:
13 games total
10 on Big Ten Network: 2 first-round games, 4 second-round games, 4 quarterfinal games
3 on CBS: both semifinals and championship game

ACC 2019 tournament:
14 games, all on ESPN, except for 1 first-game on ESPNU and 2 second-round games on ESPN2

SEC 2019 tournament:
13 games total
8 games on the SEC network: 2 first-round games, 4 second-round games, 2 quarterfinal games
5 games on ESPN: 2 quarterfinal games, both semifinals, championship game

Big East 2019 tournament:
9 games, the first 8 on FS1 and the championship game on Fox

Based on the above, the Pac-12 tournament is more of a hindrance than a help for recruiting. Heck, the West Coast Conference, Mountain West, American Athletic Conference and probably others had better TV exposure than the Pac-12 tournament in 2019!

Maybe George Kliavkoff and his brain trust have a plan in place to elevate the tournament's stature. If so, I'm still not sure how that would help recruiting, but at least it might not hurt.

RE: MBB conference schedule - BobK - 09-30-2021

Having a tournament is the recruiting issue. Not the tv possibles
Hmm SEC or Pac 12? Well the SEC is serious about basketball maybe the Pac 12 isn’t if they don’t have a post season tournament
My point is the players not fans watching on tv

I'm guessing few recruits have ever been there, and might want to go there.
But I'm admittedly not in tune with teenage basketball recruits' minds.
