Didn't fit sports trivia or Giants trivia, and I know it's a topic we like, so...

Citizen Kane yes.  Three down, five to go.  One international film.  At least two very obscure.

Vertigo is correct.  That makes four (Vertigo, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, the Godfather).  Four to go.

Hitch probably scores twice.  Rear Window is a perfect movie.
Must be a Kurosawa.
Scratch Truffaut; he wasn't impeccable.

Right on Hitch, and right on Rear Window.  Matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Hitch had another on the list...  Although it's interesting that he never won "Best Director."

All great movies.

The final three are Notorious, Boyhood and Three Colors: Red.

I saw Boyhood.  I don't really understand the rating.  Description of each of the eight are at this link:

I prefer North by Northwest to Notorious. Watched all the Colors movies, blah. Boyhood is one of those movies where the cognoscenti is awed and the rest of Hollywood and the critics are afraid of not calling it “Great.” Then there are the monumental achievements that don’t win Best Picture like Dunkirk and 1917 because a “cool” picture has to win votes because it’s “cool.”

Any viewer can be impressed by 1917 but not until you have worked in the industry can you fully appreciate what Mendes and Deakins accomplished on 1917. IMO Deakins and DP Greg Toland (Citizen Kane) are the two greatest cameramen ever and it is not close.

And a shout out to Robert Flathery (Nonook of the North) for doing more with less a century ago.

Hulk, I could go on about Deakins for hours. Should have a half dozen Oscars in his backpack. Toland won one, should have three or four more. My dad worked with most of the greats and he greatly admired Jimmy Wong Howe and Ernie Haller (Gone With the Wind).

For me the rung below the top two includes Storraro, Roizman, Almenderos, Freddie Young and four or five of the young kids working today.
