Short Memory - norcard - 10-08-2021

I don't know if it's due to covid and the current environment or what, but it feels like the major wins like Oregon are very short lived.

I remember in the past, I and others would still be on a high over a USC win let alone both USC and Oregon in the same season.

Now, they are shorter and weaker dopamine reactions.

Just a random observation.

Could be part of a "college sports not all that big a deal" mindset as part of Covid hangover.
Could be that SC is a bad team this year and Oregon pretty clearly WAY overrated as #3 team in the country; thus Ws not seen as that grand.
Could be that SF Giants are taking up a lot of fan mindshare in these parts, sucking away interest/buzz from the Cardinal.

But I'll say this:  if Stanford somehow beats ASU tonight (which I don't expect), then Cardinal fans can legitimately look to a possibly very good season.  Right now the record range is 5-7 to 7-5, which is the definition of unremarkable.  Beat ASU (barring crazy flukey W), and 9-3 is conceivable.  So excitement/enthusiasm level could ratchet up from what we've seen with a W tonight.

Interesting (at least to me) how the P12 South teams on the schedule affect my attitude about the rest of the season and possible outcomes.

I would be a lot more excited about contending for the P12 North at this point in the season if we played Colorado and Arizona instead of Utah and ASU. But I think that Utah and ASU are both tough match-ups for Stanford which makes it a lot less likely that Stanford can get to 7-2 or 6-3 in conference games. My expectations are lower as a result. Still hoping to be surprised.

Honestly, I thought the Oregon win was as much Oregon giving away the game as anything...and so it doesn't elevate my expectations for Stanford going forward.  Lot of unforced errors by Oregon, as well as unfortunate external circumstances as well.  I'll take the win, and credit to Stanford for rising to the occasion, but this was a Duck team at less than 100%, and on the last drives, very much of their own doing.

This is a little how I felt last year but it's certainly not how I feel this season, especially after going to the Oregon game in-person.

Last year, it just felt like there was an ephemeral quality to everything. I was grateful for the team to get some wins and to be able to watch games on TV for life to feel a little more normal during a hard, isolated time.

This season, we are back in the stadium. We are screaming, seeing old friends in nearby seats. We're jumping up and down in the stands and high-fiving after touchdowns, and, after the Oregon win, the fans took the field. People were leaping and hollering and high-fiving, with the band playing and the players still celebrating. Watching the video afterwards, the students started it, so I guess the security gave up trying to keep people out. Students have been attending in record numbers (for the new stadium) and I'm not surprised because they had all virtual instruction last year and they are ready to experience campus life.

Some woman came down to my section and started exhorting us to get loud and scream and she stood around a while leading our section yelling.

So, if you live in the area, and feel comfortable doing so, and are able to do so, if you are looking for some dopamine, I recommend going to a football game in-person.

The Oregon win was one of my favorite in-person games ever.

This has been a Stanford team at less than 100% all season too, you know. 3 starters (Wilson, McGill, STM) have been out this whole time, and Bragg was out for Oregon. Not to mention the clusterf*** of additional depth missing in the secondary (Bonner, Manley, N Williams, Brandon Jones was injured until now...)

Kinda like the way I still view the USC game last month. Always sweet to beat those guys but there was something just not right with the Trojans that day. Even the the Trojan band seemed oddly muted. I am still looking forward to an unconditionally rip-roaring, resonating, kick-ass win against a worthy foe. Tonight has all the ingredients. Gonna reveal a lot about Shaw's team.

Thinking that might have something to do with the team getting its butt kicked.  Not much of a chance to play "Conquest" when the team ain't conquering jack.  Honestly, it is one of the better perks of beating the Trojans.

You clearly haven't been paying much attention to the Trojan band over the years.

With CJ Verdell out the rest of the ways, the odds of winning the North have improved regardless of tonight’s outcome.
