Men's Golf @ Georgia - winflop - 10-25-2021

Sorry for the lack of preview/interim results I was away for the weekend.

The men's golf team finished 5th in a very strong field of 15 teams that included ten of the Top 30. Unlike many of the previous men's and women's tournaments, there were plenty of birdies to be had, with all but 3 teams and nearly half of players finishing under par.

T3 Vilips -12
T23 Thorbjornsen -3
T37 Brown E
T43 Yang +1
T59 Shimp +5

The men's team had been ranked 4th coming into the tournament, which I think even Coach Ray would say was too high. But fall season rankings are pretty volatile, with a somewhat shorter season and not much of a track record on which to base them. I personally don't pay attention to golf team rankings until at least the end of February, although I think the women's team might be the exception with the way they have pretty much blown away the competition in all three tournaments so far.

The men's team concludes their fall season Nov 8-10 at Pebble Beach, where I have offered to be a substitute as I still have some eligibility remaining. The women's team's final fall tournament is Nov 1-3 at Nanea on the Big Island.

One of our guys took an 8 on the opening par 3 and I believe was under par for the round at the end.  Not easy to forget a +5 on one hole to open a round and play like that the rest of the way.

Yang made an 8 yesterday on #1, a par 5.  #1 has a creek left of the fairway -- I'd guess he found it.  Yang played 3 under from there in.  good rally as his score counted yesterday.

it was Vilips best collegiate finish, tied for 3rd.

Yes, it was a good rally, I don't know where I got the par 3 part, getting older I guess.  Next Spring, big challenges will be making the stroke play part which I think they will do, harder part will be getting out of stroke play into match play.  Seems to be more teams out there who can go low.

who knows that far out on NCAAs.  recall last year came down to who was medically eligible for us as the big determinant for year end play.

played UGA's course Saturday and it was very benign -- greens great, firm fairways and Bermuda dormant -- perfect for scoring.  I assume the same for the Golf Club of Georgia which hosted the Stanford tournament played as the course doesn't normally yield such low scores.  I missed CRay and crew -- I will have to catch them at a tournament later in the year.

team is much better early than I expected.  CRay's guys usually getting better and better throughtout the year.  I hope that is true this year as well.

Yes. Our top two guys last year (Barclay Brown & Henry Shimp) both tested positive and didn't play in the regionals. We missed the cut by 4 shots.

I met with Conrad the day after the team arrived on campus. He said he liked their position as an unknown, sleeper. Then they went out and won earlier this month at Colonial against several top 10 teams. Sleeper no more...and he knows how to moneyball the match play if they get that far at NCAAs.
