2012 story: Cal welcoming back former athletes as students - M T - 11-11-2021

I ran across this when looking at the Cal FB-Covid fiasco.  I thought it is a laudable story from 2012 about the neighbor across the bay. I don't recall ever seeing it mentioned here (Apologies if I missed it.)

Cal welcomes elite athletes back to school

Quote:Like dozens of other elite Cal athletes who left school early for big-league sports careers, [former SF Giants player Tyler] Walker is using the university’s degree-completion program. College athletes with big-money futures increasingly feel the need to improve their academic performance.
The program ... is open to any former student interested in finishing his or her schoolwork. But its main focus is on athletes...
About 100 former athletes have returned to UC Berkeley in the completion program’s six or so years.

Only a handful of other universities with big-money sports programs, including the Ohio State University and the University of Kentucky, have similar programs for athletes. Stanford University, however, does not, said spokesman Jim Young — mainly because nearly all athletes graduate before leaving school.

Of course, elite athletes aren't the only ones who sometimes leave school early while still in good standing.  But it is good to see such an offering.
