MBB: Stanford vs Santa Clara, Friday, 8 PM, CBS Sports Network -
Papa John - 11-12-2021
The Stanford men have their first road game of the season at Santa Clara, who ran away at a young age to follow San Francisco.
Back to basketball: SCU was the preseason pick to finish 6th in the 10-team West Coast Conference. Don't know much about this team, but they have two players on the 10-player preseason all-WCC team: F Josip Vrankic and G Jalen Williams. Like Stanford, SCU has played one game so far this season. The Broncos defeated Cal State Fullerton 84-77.
The Broncos are coached by Herb Sendek, who coached for 10 seasons at Arizona State and has also coached at Miamo (OH) and NC State. He has coached Santa Clara since 2016.
Sendek career highlights: While at Miami of Ohio, Sendek finished 1st in the Mid-America Conference and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament in 1995. While at NC State, his teams reached the NCAA five years in a row including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2006. At ASU, he coached James Harden, among others, and his teams had two NCAA appearances, including a second round appearance in 2009. He's had no postseason appearances with SCU, and his teams have been middle of the pack in conference play.

SCU was 12-8 last year and 20-13 the year before. They tend to beat really weak, technically D-1 schools, then get stomped by Pac-12 schools (lost to USC at USC last year 86-63, lost to Gonzaga 104-54). Stanford beat SCU at Stanford last year, 82-64.
Broncos return their top three scorers in Vrankic, Williams & Justice. Jaden Bediako was an all-conference freshman center at 6'10" but faded as a sophomore last year. He was the second highest ranked recruit in Canada. Jordan Williams shoots 43% from 3 pt range off the bench. Two newcomers, graduate transfer JT Pipes who had 83 starts at Wisconsin-Green Bay -- he scored 14.5 points and shot 40.7% from 3 pt range at UW-GB. Parker Braun played 44 games at Missouri, and sat out last season. Eligible this year. They added four frosh, only one of whom played against Fullerton State, Carlos Stewart from Louisiana, a good PG.
Against Fullerton, Vrankic (6'9" PF) scored 29 w/8 rebs., jalen Williams had 16, Justice had 14, Pipes had 10. Vrnakic had 5 steals and 5 assists, both led the team.
It's a short team. J. Williams and Pipes are about 6'1", transfer Braun is a 6'10" forward, Vrankic is 6'9" and Justice is 6'7". No idea what happened to Bediako, the 6'10" former all-WCC frosh...he played only 7 minutes against Fullerton. SCU is also a bad rebounding team. Fullerton outrebounded them 34-24.
SCU didn't turn the ball over much (8) and had 19 assists. SCU shoots pretty well, 57% on FGs, and 11/13 from the line.
If you want to go to the game, tickets are $15.00.

Here's SCU's spectator COVID policy:
For athletic events held in seated indoor venues, SCU requires spectators to provide pre-attendance proof of vaccination verification OR proof of a negative antigen test within 24 hours of the event OR PCR lab-based test within 72 hours of the event. Individuals under the age of 12 are exempt from providing proof of vaccination and testing. Click here for detailed instructions.

O'Connell is starting over Silva. I can't imagine that will last many more games.
Delaire back in the starting lineup, too.
5-0 start for us followed by a 12-0 SC run. We are out of position on every single defensive possession. Nothing but open shots for them.

5-14 at this writing. Stanford will wake up at some point.
Now 10-26 with 10:45 left in the first half.

I don't have CBSSN, and based on the score I am not really worried about watching the highlights.
I thought Haase couldn't have a season bad enough to be fired with the pandemic still a viable excuse, but I may have misjudged the Haase floor.

Disorganized offense and useless defense....so far. Will there ever be a screen for Jones?
Reynaud looks impressive. He will be starting soon. Has strong hands for a string bean.
He can even jump.

Now 24-30. Stanford making strong (and expected) comeback.

As stanford starts to make a comeback, Haase subs out Ingram and Reynaud. Santa Clara goes on 10-0 run.. smh

I think I am the only person who likes coach Haase and what he has brought to the Stanford program. His recruiting is heating up and the results in the w/l column aren't the best but Stanford hasn't been good in a long time so I have never been too hopeful.
I think this years team will be good but it's only the second game of the year and once the freshman get the feel for the game we will win more games than expected. To me, the team will only go as far as the freshman will take them. Silva, Ingram, and Raynaud will carry the team this year.
This game Silva looks very tentative and has a few early turnovers but I am looking forward to the future.
Raynaud is a beast on the boards and has a very good feel on the offensive end with screen & rolls. His defense will come in time.
Ingram needs to demand the ball more. He is being too selfless and needs to body his defender on the post. He reminds me on Kyle Anderson.
At the half SCU is shooting 61.5% from 3pt which is insane and 60% from 2pt. When (if) they cool off Stanford will be back in the game.

Santa Clara with 2 long scoring runs, 21 and 10 points had them ahead 42-28.
Raynaud is very good and already our best center.
45-32 at the half. They have made 8 three pointers so far. We have been too cold from the field and haven't been able to stop their long distance shooting.

I like Haase too, both his recruiting and the attitudes he brings to the team. However, at some point, the results have to follow. And the results just have not come.

Reynaud is single handedly keeping us in this game. That kid is going to be a star.
The eventual starting lineup of Silva, Ingram, Jones, Delaire, and Reynaud could end up being our most talented starting 5 in years. Whether or not that talent translates into wins depends, unfortunately, on Haase's coaching. Hard to be optimistic about that.

I think he is a great person, and a fantastic recruiter of players. That's actually part of the problem.
His recruits over the last 3 or 4 years have been good enough that Stanford should have a better W/L record. Every year it is the same story...The team will be as good as those that have not been ruined by Haase yet will take the team. Here in November they might actually win a few games over other teams loaded with one and done AAU talents. However by March those other squads will have their frosh playing efficiently in the system while team Haase will still be playing like a recently formed AAU squad.

I agree. Raynaud, Ingram and Silva look promising and lots of potential. Hopefully Jones will start making his 3 pointers again.
I cringe every time Kisunas is in the game.

I give Kisunas credit. He's stronger and more nimble this year, but Reynaud is much better.

What's up with Delaire?? He has been horrible. A young team needs leadership from its most experienced players. He is -18 in +/- at the half and has 4 TOs to go with 2 points.

Haase has been playing Delaire on the perimeter on offense. That's totally not his game-- wasting his strengths.
