Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - OutsiderFan - 11-06-2011

Wow.  Might be #2 in BCS rankings, depending on the Harris voters...

Unfortunately, there's no way that'll happen (unless the Harris voters do something really unexpected, like moving OK State down a couple of places).  OK State has a big lead in the computers, and that lead is likely to grow this week.

No chance of that. We might move slightly ahead of OK State with the Harris voters, but they're so far ahead of us with the computers that they'll still have a comfortable overall lead over us.

I actually think there's a chance that we end up fourth in the BCS rankings behind Alabama this week. They're third in Sagarin's ratings this week, and we're eighth. If they stay ahead of us, Stanford fans will freak out, but I'm sure we would move into the third slot with a win over Oregon.

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - OutsiderFan - 11-06-2011

My personal belief is if Stanford beats Oregon, the coaches and the Harris voters will start voting Stanford #2 much more consistently, so as to overtake the computers.  Because:

A) Oregon is better than any team Okie State will play this year
B) Everyone wants to see Andrew Luck play the SEC
C) The human voters are not going to want their votes overridden by computers
D) NOBODY wants to see LSU/Alabama again - what an awful game with two seriously mediocre QBs.
E) Oklahoma State's defense is atrocious; 99th against the run; 110 overall; 77th in scoring defense
F) Stanford is the best combination of offense and defense in the country

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - Farm93 - 11-06-2011

Uh huh on the Bama thing.  Bama is #4 in AP and Coaches' poll.  The computers are probably going to keep them near Boise State too.  If Bama has not stayed ahead of Boise, they will pass them when/if they beat Auburn.

This Week's BCS Standings SHOULD/COULD look like this...1) LSU, 2) OK State, 3) Stanford, 4a) Bama 4b) Boise

It looks as though Bama will be right there behind Ok State and Stanford.  Both should be safe IF they go undefeated, but Bama is probably right in line for a rematch.  Stanford will move up in the computer rankings as more teams lose down the stretch, so it should be OK.  Getting to #2 in the two human polls probably will offset any softness in the computers.

FWIW - Stanford can't pass OK State.  The computers all believe the Big 12 is BETTER THAN the SEC thanks to only 3 OOC losses.  OK State plays Oklahoma, and that is better than Oregon in the eyes of the computers because Oklahoma's only loss was to a team that OK State also plays.  I am not sure Oklahoma is better than Oregon, but Oklahoma is better to the computers.  OK State controls its destiny, bottom line.

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - fullmetal - 11-06-2011

Well, the computers don't know that Ryan Broyles is done for the season.  OU without their top receiver is not the same OU.  I'm no longer certain OU has a chance to beat Okie lite, although anything can happen.  (Recall that their starting RB, Dominique Whaley, broke his ankle last weekend and is also out for the season.)

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - dabigv13 - 11-06-2011

Oklahoma crushed the same Kansas State team that almost beat OK State last night, and Oklahoma looked pretty darn alright even without Broyles last night against A&M. They have plenty of great WR depth.

I suspect Oklahoma will be playing with some intensity in that game. They'll certainly be favored.

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - fullmetal - 11-06-2011

Big 12, y u no consistent?

And Stanford has to beat Oregon.

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - Cardinal96 - 11-06-2011

I was telling a buddy yesterday that I am not going to start worrying about Oklahoma State or NCG implications unless and until we beat Oregon.  That will be a dogfight.  THis coming Saturday can't come soon enough.

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - dabigv13 - 11-06-2011

Completely agreed. I honestly wonder if we don't match up better against a team like LSU than Oregon. Oregon has the edge speed and tempo that will seriously challenge our defense.

We'll need to play our best game of the season to beat Oregon.

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - Farm93 - 11-06-2011

Very cute hypothetical poll up on ESPN's site now.

"If Only LSU and Boise State remain undefeated at the end of the regular season, who plays for the national title?"

1) Rematch of LSU-Alabama
2) LSU vs. Boise State
3) LSU vs. Another one-loss team

The question is only funny because of the results by state.  Hilarious!

Most states are going with Boise State.  The ones that are not feeling the Bronco love?
Oregon, Oklahoma and 4 SEC states.

Too funny.

Re: Stanford #2 in Coaches Poll - metsjetsfan - 11-06-2011

Alabama #4 over Boise State in both polls by A LOT.  That does not bode well for Boise State or any other 1 loss team...
