WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - 81alum - 11-22-2021

Preview:

Stanford's first game in the Bahamas (televised by Flohoops) is against #4 Indiana, who will be favored.  However, Massey still has us at 5 and Indiana down at 21, so there is a lot of confusion in the computer polls so early in the season with so few games.

Indiana is coming off a spectacular COVID year, going 21-6 and winning its first three games in the NCAAs--the final victory coming at the expense of #1 NC State.  Arizona finally defeated them in the elite 8.

Last year they were led by 6'3" MacKenzie Holmes, one of the best players in the nation as a sophomore, and she is back this year.  She has already had a 29 point game against Kentucky this year--and Kentucky is a serious program.  Holmes is averaging 19.  Her game is all within the arc, and she has few assists, so once she gets the ball she scores 61% of the time from inside.

Indiana does have other players too.  In fact, they have 5 players averaging in double digits, making it a very difficult team to scout.  If we double up and focus on Holmes, the other 4 players on the floor are all threats.  They have several capable three point shooters, but one truly outstanding one.  Nicole Cardano is 10/16 from beyond the arc so far this year.   Grace Berger, a 6'0" senior guard, is their second leading scorer at 15ppg.  Ali Patberg has nearly a 5:1 assist to turnover ratio.  Clearly Patberg feeds the ball to Holmes, a lot.

In short, Indiana is an exceptionally well balanced and successful team.  It is the kind of team we have trouble defending, and it is the kind of team--with a crafty and mobile forward-- who could get Brink into foul trouble.

Does Indiana have a weakness?  Their five starters have most of the minutes, two players off the bench have about half as many minutes each, and no one else has played very much.  It does not look like they are as deep as we are.

So if anyone thought we would have something easy after Gonzaga--nope.  Our schedule is brutal.

If JONES is not available to play, forget it.  Indiana is much better than Gonzaga, with proven scorers at all positions.  In this case, Indiana wins by a big margin.

If JONES plays, I still predict an Indiana win.  They are a well-oiled machine vs. Stanford which is still struggling to find its identity without an established PG.

I actually think we match up ok with Indiana. Watching South Florida now; they are very good defensively. But not so much  offensively. Maryland game we will have to get hot to keep up offensively or we’ll get run out of the gym. Different styles with all three opponents.

Oregon 24 to's against S Florida. 7 by point guard

Oregon was down several players, including point guard Paopao.  Similar to our struggling a bit without Jones and without an established point guard, Oregon was struggling against South Florida without their point guard and without Sabally.  And they lost.

We played South Florida a couple of years ago at Maples and their three point shooting was very dangerous.  They will test our perimeter defense.

Oregon also without Rogers.

It looks like Flosports are the only way to watch these games and you have to pay for it. Is that true? Pretty ridiculous that no network/cable stations picked up these games. Defending champ Stanford vs two teams currently ranked in the top 4 is a big deal and should be televised.

Any idea how much it costs? As far as I can tell, the only way to find out is by actually signing up.

Cool, thanks. $10/game. Cheaper than Maples. I guess this is not the streamer who broadcast the Thanksgiving tourney a couple of years ago.

Any news if Haley Jones will be available to play this game?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Indiana 1030am Thanksgiving Day - CompSci87 - 11-23-2021

Are folks planning to sign up for FloHoops to see the games? I did the "sign up and cancel after a month" thing a while back to see a game. The experience wasn't great and I seem to remember that it was a bit hard to cancel. But I guess I'll do it again.

Good news, the FTC is supposed to be cracking down on that.

These should be some good games. The reality is all three are "win-able" and all three could very well be losses. I am excited to see the team against Indiana, I agree that we match up well against them. Hoping we can go 3-0 this weekend.

I would be careful before signing up for Flosports/Flohoops.  I just read through the reviews on the Google Play store and they were nightmarish.  Common themes of reviews were 1) unable to cast to TV via Chromecast, 2) they charge you for 12 months even if you try to sign up for month-to-month, 3) they play ads over the top of games frequently rather than at commercial breaks, 4) poor audio and video quality and performance (lots of buffering), and 5) no way to call customer service, only email and slow to respond.

It breaks my heart to not be able to watch these games.

Okay, I might have a solution for die hard WBB fans that don't want to subscribe to Flohoops.  I think this will work:

Load Flohoops in your computer browser: https://www.flohoops.com/
You will see little windows of the current live feeds.  These appear to be real time feeds.  They will only last about 50 seconds, but if you refresh the page they will start again.  If you zoom in your browser window you can get a picture larger than a smartphone screen. You will miss some of the action while the page reloads, but at least you can see most of the game.

Pair this with the audio feed and you can see and hear the games.  Here is the link to the audio feed for the Indiana game: https://gostanford.com/watch/?Live=1390&type=Live

I know that this is a bush fix, but . . .

Thanks for the heads up. Never seen so many bad reviews (bad is being generous). Very disappointed that I won't be watching, but can't ignore the Flosports reviews.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Indiana 1030am Thanksgiving Day - CompSci87 - 11-24-2021

My experience with FloHoops last time wasn't *that* bad.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Indiana 1030am Thanksgiving Day - M T - 11-24-2021

At least if you sign up for FloSports, I think you can go watch the replay of Stanford beating Cal last Saturday.

triangle2 - triangle2 - 11-24-2021

I signed up a couple of years ago when the team had a tournament in a strange location - maybe Vancouver? I would give the service a C+/B-. The interface was kind of 2005 and there was more buffering than I would prefer but I saw the team games that I wanted to see. I kept it for a couple of months to see if other non-PAC 12 games were worth watching. (Answer: not really). I cancelled successfully online and didn’t have to scream at anyone or cancel my credit card. Degree of difficulty for canceling was about 3.5 out of 10 with 10 being some Comcast nightmare. I will probably try again tomorrow.
