I read the comment sections in some news articles on the Gatorade deal. About 50% of the comments were along the lines of "Who is this. Never heard of him/her. Is Paige a male or female name?"
Apparently there is still a limited audience throughout this country for women's basketball. Yes, it's hard for Cardboarders and other WBB fans to believe. The sport has a long way to go.
Gatorade knows they're not going to sell all that much more product because her picture is on it.

Anyone care to summarize what’s behind the Chron paywall?

have lots of followers on social media platforms (Instrgram and Tik-Tok seem to be the most important) that you can monetize

Be cute, sexy, attractive...
Create an online presence with cute and sexy photos
Get lots of followers
And make some money.
This has been a revenue source for some college women, but not for college athletes prior to NIL.
I know sometimes this type of revenue stream gets a bit tricky for the WTA where attractive players can make millions while others make very little even if they are much more successful on the tour.
I can only imagine that some college teams will struggle with NIL inequities and the impact that might have on team harmony.

The Chron story also describes that doing those things - keeping up an online presence and dealing with companies for endorsements is stressful and time consuming. Just what every busy college athlete needs! I do not at all begrudge the players making some money with NIL. I do think it adds a problematic layer to their experience.

As I mentioned in the Brain Kelly thread, the athletes aren't going to tolerate being exploited very much longer. College athletes performing for their schools for free is like cooking meals for someone who never pays you for the groceries and instead feels they are paying by encouraging you to become a professional chef. Just absurd.

Yeah, they're so exploited. Entry into college (that 95% of them never would attend otherwise); room and board; plus "intangible" benefits, which vary from school to school.
Why don't you prefer a NFL D-League; leave college for those who prioritize it; and then cap coaching salaries (which again, seems to be what animates those crying "Exploitation! Exploitation!")?
Frankly, as Stanford football crumbles to nothing, I'm caring less and less about the rest of the CFB world. Maybe NIL and player comp would stratify the haves and have nots to the point where you have a much smaller group of schools playing and compensating their athletes. In that world - which I think is a very real eventual outcome of the world we are seeing unfold - do you think the societal benefit of paying kids at the "Have Schools" outweighs the societal detriment of the kids at the "Have Not" schools no longer being afforded the opportunity to attend college?
