Football: PFF all-conference team -
Papa John - 12-01-2021
Pro Football Focus has released its all-conference teams. You can find the all-Pac-12 team here (not behind a paywall):
https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-2021-all-conference-teams
Stanford, as one might expect, is not well-represented, but congratulations to the following Cardinal:
1st Team
TE Benjamin Yurosek
3rd Team
K Joshua Karty
PR Casey Filkins
Honorable Mention
WR Elijah Higgins
RG Branson Bragg
FLEX D Kyu Blu Kelly
P Ryan Sanborn
KR Nathaniel Peat
The silver lining, I suppose, is that it's possible that each of these players will return for the 2022 season.
As for its methodology, PFF claims that it analyzes every player and every play of every FBS game in the 2021 NCAA season.

Well we may have stunk it up on Offense and Defense, but at least one phase of the game was going well. From the punting and kick return sides we also got lots of game time practice.

No surprise at all. Stanford and Arizona, given the dearth of their returning talent in '22, will more than likely be picked to finish at the bottom of the Pac. But, no problemo! Shaw has all but confirmed his bullet-proof comeback plan: Stay The Course. That'll show 'em. Can't wait!

I don't see where he has done that. Let's see what develops. I'm not expecting that any coaches will be outright fired, but it wouldn't surprise me if some of them leave the program and go elsewhere - likely at Shaw's "suggestion"

Click on Troy Clardy's podcast and listen carefully to Shaw's post-game delusions about his team and his staff. I dunno who he thinks he's kidding, other than himself.

Early in the season, Tremayne and McKee seemed headed to all-league status, but something happened on the way to that place.

Well, it's obvious what happened to Tremayne and, of course, we're all pulling for a full recovery. As for Tanner McKee, it seems that teams got wise to the slant route, but he threw it anyway.

Benjamin Yurosek has been exceptional, moreso that he produced when he seemed one of few viable options for the offense.

Our situation doesn't seem to have any good answers at the moment. The coaches are all out recruiting trying to lockdown a pretty good class. Now all these coaches have established relationships with the people they are recruiting. Do we dump a coach and then start looking for a replacement and leave the recruit dangling in the wind or do we let the class solidify itself, and then make changes. Of course if some kid has committed since he really liked his position coach and we dump that coach unless NLI have been signed we run the risk of losing a recruit.
I am interested in what people thing is the best way to handle this issue.

I don't advocate dumping the head coach at the moment, but if you hire the right coach he will be able to retain the recruits. Jim Harbaugh was hired in December 2007 and there was no early signing period, so Stanford commits had at least some opportunities to look elsewhere. But I don't think he had a single decommitment from Harris' recruits (but someone with a better memory, feel free to correct me). Part of that was probably due to the fact that there aren't a lot of scholarship offers still available at other schools in mid-December, but I'm sure part of it was Jim Harbaugh's ability to sell Stanford as both an academic and upcoming football school.
The 2007 class was not at all highly rated, but it had some solid players: Coby Fleener, Owen Marecic, Doug Baldwin.

if someone was willing to commit while Harris was the coach I cannot imagine them decommitting when he was fired...

The flip side of the question is will we lose recruits if Shaw doesn't make some major changes. A recruit might say, "I don't want to play for a coach that doesn't want to do what it takes to win."

Maybe, but the 2022 class is looking pretty good at the moment, knock on wood, and this is after Stanford's last-place North finishes in the previous two full seasons.

If Stanford can survive/recovery from the Harris fiasco they should be able to overcome the current issues that are within the norm. Free Agency, Buying Recruits and paying up the hole for big name coaches are outside the norm.
