Pac-12 Championship Game -
needle - 12-03-2021
I predict it will be the lowest-rated Pac championship game of all time.
No players in the hunt for the Voldemort, no impact on CFP, an overall dreadful year for actually quite a few teams (Stanford, Kal, Washington, SC, Arizona, Colorado). Can't imagine many fans tuning in unless they have a real rooting interest.

The ratings will be low thanks to the rankings and the score, but with Utah near Vegas and Oregon able to travel the place looked crowded enough at kickoff. For the 4 Pac-12 CGs Stanford has participated in only the one at Arizona State had a decent crowd, so I suspect the Pac-12 administrators are relieved two of the teams that travel in numbers are in this game.
Putting the game in Vegas makes a lot of sense. Vegas is a neutral town, every Pac-12 community can get to Vegas easily, the place has loads of hotels, and the stadium is stunning.

Looks like the Utes are dominating again.
31-3 after 3 quarters.

31-3 Utah in 3rd quarter.
does anyone know what we're going to do when we play in Salt Lake City next year?

Always good to see Ducks turned into Foie Gras.

Who put the Stanford team in green and white? Oregon had 100 yards at halftime and with about 5 min to play has just over 200 yards of total offense and only 74 yards rushing. Crystobal is a phenomenal recruiter but doesn’t do very much with it.

The grumbling on ESPN during the day is that he will accept an offer to coach Miami soon. That's the catch when the coach is working there because it was the best job available. There are a lot of programs outside the Pac-12 that will try to lure you away, and it is likely they will offer more of the things coaches crave.
Cristobal is a U alum, so odds are that if they want him they will not have a problem getting enough money to pull him away. Miami has wealthy alums, and play in a time zone that generates far more national interest than the Pacific time zone.
Who knows? Maybe Oregon will try to hire Wilcox next week.

Wow the refs must really be screwing them. Everyone knows Oregon can never lose on their own. Sun must be in their eyes!

Good for Utah. They've been through hell this year and I'll be pulling for them in the Rose Bowl.
I thought the Utes were done after they lost to BYU and SDSU early in the season. But Cam Rising is a solid QB and Whittingham is an even better coach.

Wilner tweeted a while back that Utah football had a Grad Success Rate of 90 (Stanford's GSR was 93). Go Utes!

Well, the last time they had a coach poached by a Florida school, they made out alright and Florida State fired the coach (Taggart) a couple years later.

I was going to ask: who put the 2013 Stanford team in black and red? Whittingham's team looks a lot like the Rose Bowl team with Hogan and Gaffney. Rising is a mobile threat, like Hogan. And there was a bit of Gaffney in Thomas and his runs up the gut. Plus, the Utah D just locked down the Duck offense much the way Stanford teams in the past used to dominate opponents. The Utes also won the TOP battle with a methodical ground game and some passing mixed in. Would love to see a team like that in Cardinal Red and White again.

That won't happen in this case. As Cristobal is an alum of the school he will be able to stay for 8-10 years, that's the rule. The U has hit tougher times over the last ten years, so it might take a few years to get the program into credible CFP consideration range.
He will get time and the financials likely will favor a few years of stability too.
Cristobal makes $7 million now, so I am guessing he will get a contract for 5 years and $9 million before bonuses. The U would also have to pay $9 million to buyout the UofO contract that only drops a little bit in Jan 2022. The buyout costs and a multiyear deal will make firing him rather expensive unless another donor group with the U then agrees gift the school the $20-$30 million it would cost to terminate Cristobal, pay a different coach's buyout and offer that coach $11 or $12 million per year which might not even approach the going rate for top jobs in 2024.
Back to our conference, if Cristobal leaves the event will create a cascade of events in the Pac-12. It is unlikely Miami (or Cristobal) will want a bunch of assistants not familiar with recruiting throughout the entire SEC footprint. So one of the better Pac-12 jobs will be open and there could be a lot of shuffling at the staff level.

Did enough to get to the championship game. I remember those days. Vaguely.

Also did enough to lose to us.
Agree with Astroturf that the Utah team looked a lot like the best Stanford teams from 2010-2015.

I went with 2013 because Rising is not Luck (2010-2011) and Thomas is not McCaffrey (2015). But the whole team is really solid. I'll be curious to see who their opponent is in the Rose Bowl. I have seen varying predictions with Iowa, Ohio State or Michigan as the B1G representative. Guess we will know tomorrow.

It won’t be Michigan. If Michigan wins, they will be in the playoffs; if they lose, Iowa will be the BigTen rep to the Rose Bowl. My guess is it will be Ohio State.

Crystobal was offered an “aggressive” contract extension, a year after he signed a new deal.

It is probably worth noting that the reports aren’t that he *signed* a new deal, so I’m guessing his agent is engaging in a bidding war between Miami and Oregon.

Also, the link said Crystobal made $5.5 million this year, not $7 million.
