WBB: Stanford 91 - Pacific 62 - 81alum - 12-08-2021

Preview:

Stanford comes home after its grueling 3 game tournament in the Bahamas and after Fall quarter finals to take on Pacific in the friendly confines of Maples.  Pacific and then Davis are our only two chances to see the team at home until January 7 after league play has already started, since we next go on the very difficult Tennessee/South Carolina road trip followed by New Year's Eve in Seattle and Jan 2 in Pullman against a dangerous WSU team.  So this team continues its "brutal" (to use Tara' own word) schedule and we might have thought that the Pacific and Davis games were a bit of an interlude.

But that would be dangerous thinking--just as South Florida was not exactly an "interlude" between highly ranked Indiana and Maryland.

Pacific is up first, and on paper we really should beat them.  They are 2-6, and rated 217th by Massey.  But before we get too cocky, bear in mind that Oregon State only edged them 76-72, and Pacific led OSU by 5 points with 3 minutes left before losing their lead in the last 2 minutes.  Any team that can lead OSU that late in a game needs to be respected.

In the OSU game, Anaya James scored 31 against Rueck's always formidable defense, and was 5/7 from three point range.  James is a 5'9" freshman guard from Torrance California.  James has been averaging 15 ppg, but she is just a freshman and so she is getting better as the season deepens, and will no doubt draw Anna Wilson or Lacie Hull to defend her.  She leads the team with assists by a considerable margin, so I assume she is also the point guard.

Pacific has started 8 players for several games each, so they are still experimenting with lineups.  In addition to James they have two other players shooting treys in the mid to upper 30% range.

Their second leading scorer is a 6'3" freshman center, who is hitting 51% of her shots.  She is backed up by a 6'5" center who scores less but leads the team in rebounding.  She is a sophomore.  The other 3 top scorers are all sophomores--this is a very very young team.

In short, this team seems to have some talent and at times plays very well--well enough to take Oregon State to the brink.  Despite their losing record, they have scored more points than their opponents, they have fewer turnovers than their opponents, and they match up well with their opponents in most ways.  Their one weakness seems to be rebounding--they have been out rebounded this season by a considerable margin.

Tara knows that with Oregon State's near debacle vs. Pacific, she should not take Pacific lightly.

I predict Stanford will have its biggest lead of 25+ points.  Final margin of victory will depend on whether Tara empties her bench early.

Is that a handicap that they take?  No wonder games were close!  (;-)

Thanks MT!  One of the charms of the Cardboard is the accurate and meticulous correction of grammar and sentence structure!

I should have said: "Eight different players for Pacific have each been in the stating lineup several times...."

I do wonder how we would do in a 5 on 8 drill....

And sometimes, if a team is really successful at being called for fouls, they have only 4 or 3 players available to be on the floor. Makes for all sorts of interesting possibilities!

Indeed! My former trainer at UCSB played for the Gauchos in the late 1980s/early 90s. She told me about a time when her team played Stanford, and the Gauchos were called for so many fouls that they finished with 4 players.

I remember that game, was thinking of it when I wrote my comment. As I recall, when there were only 4 players on the floor, the ref went to the UCSB coach and asked when they were going to put in their 5th player -- and the answer was, they weren't because they didn't have one -- or something like that.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Pacific Sunday 12pm - Blue Hawk (Mizzou) Card - 12-09-2021

During my second year at Stanford  Law, I was on a team of fellow 2Ls (as its weakest member, by far) that made it to the championship  game of the law school basketball tournament, at Maples. The opposing team was a 3L team. Unfortunately, so were the  "officials."

Somehow we hung in with them, despite lots of fouls on our team. With a couple minutes to go, another one of our guys (i.e., the latest of three or four) fouled out, so I went into the game.

We were still hanging around, so another guy fouled out, taking us down to four, with about a minute to go.

Then we had the audacity to go up by one, iirc, with about a half minute to go. We (not me, to be sure) blocked a shot with ten or so seconds left. But, of course, a foul was called. So we were down to three on the floor. To their credit, the 3Ls hit both free throws to go up by one.

You would think that five could smother three, especially when one of them was me, but we actually got a decent shot off. We missed, though, thereby sparing the officials the unpleasantness of having to call an offensive foul.

At least, that's the way I remember it.

Since then, I've taken a special interest in games where one team has less than five. Quite often, it seems, the shorthanded team does better than you would expect. But they almost never win.

With the right combo of Pac-12 refs, less of a drill and more of a reality.

...then there was that time Arizona almost beat OSU with 2 players on the floor...

If Arizona had only made their free throws... https://arizonawildcats.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2007-08/oregon-state/boxscore/2245

Mizzou Card was a classmate of mine at SLS, and I’m here to say that he is being too modest about his prowess as a basketball player. He was not the weakest player on that team. He was merely below average.

What could be better in life than an old buddy with a really bad memory? I'm quite sure I was much worse than below average!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Pacific Sunday 12pm - 81alum - 12-12-2021

The game is coming up in about an hour, I am setting out to attend, and thought I would bump this thread in case people forgot it existed.

It will be interesting to see how Tara is developing the rotation in light of the three game ordeal in the Bahamas, to get us ready for the brutality of two difficult road trips in the near future.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Pacific Sunday 12pm - 81alum - 12-12-2021

So far, I do not see Jana warming up.  Brown in street clothes helping out.  Harriel warming up.  Maybe I am just missing someone.

Nneka is in attendance.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Pacific Sunday 12pm - TheFarm07 - 12-12-2021

We lead 30-18 after one quarter.

Our offense is clicking, hitting 63% of our shots with everyone who's been in the game having scored. We are also outrebounding Pacific 12-2.

Our defense can get better, we are letting them land half of their shots.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Pacific Sunday 12pm - CompSci87 - 12-12-2021

Pacific has some players who can really shoot.
