NFL - Mills named the starting QB the rest of the season -

Nice to maintain a Stanford QB presence in the league. Can't hurt recruiting.

He's got no RB and no OL to speak of though...it's a tough gig trying to be an NFL QB in that situation.

And good for him. A star-crossed college career but talent ultimately prevails.

Hopefully the talent evaluators for the Texans will take that into account as they consider his long term prospects.

Is Tyrod Taylor injured? Or is this a "play for the future move" exclusively?

You are so right. It is a tough gig to SURVIVE attempting to be a NFL QB in that situation, which is what I worry about. It is a form of cannon fodder.

Agreed, Mills is in a physically precarious situation with a bad OL and no run game.
Tyrod Taylor has a torn ligament in his left wrist. He throws right-handed.

What, exactly, are the Texans doing?
- Trade DeAndre Hopkins for a bag of peanuts
- PO Deshaun Watson so he asks for trade
- A lawyer tied to the owner unleashes over a dozen sex harassment lawsuits on Watson
- Leak they want to trade Watson and ask for the moon, even though the lawsuits damage his value
- Suspend Justin Reid for some unknown reason
- Cut best LB Zach Cunningham a year after signing him to big extension
- Tyrod Taylor injures his non-throwing wrist, and they make Mills starter in impossible situation for rookie
Have I missed anything?

Let JJ Watt go elsewhere, got rid of Clowney, hired the Pen State coach, took on David Johnsons h-u-g-e contract that he no longer earns.

Here's even more.
Not only did they trade away D-Hop, who was on a 5 year $81M contract...they then signed Brandin Cooks, a definitively worse WR (but at least he's not dead weight like Johnson), who was in the middle of - you guessed it - an
identical 5 year $81M contract.
Bill O'Brien the coach may or may not have been a good hiring decision, but Bill O'Brien as coach
AND GM was beyond stupid.
Trading 2 1sts and a 2nd to the Dolphins for Laremy Tunsil - then making him the highest-paid OT by annual salary ($22M!!!) - was comical. He got thumb surgery in October and has not played since, and rumors are swirling he's going to get traded away after just 2 years in Houston.

Agreed. This could end up getting him mutilated with no future path forward. Nice to be the starter; but when you are a sitting duck, what are the chances you capitalize on the first-string position?

The only bullet I take issue with is the second one from top on Watson. Dude just signed a mega extension and almost immediately began asking for a trade. SCREW THAT! If you don't like the team/city, then don't sign the massive extension.
All the other stuff re: Watson . . . well, it smells bad in terms of personal character, irrespective if there was any criminal conduct going on, which remains an open question (though there's been plenty of time to investigate and issue criminal charges, imo).

Ideally you survive, show enough that somebody else will want you, and then get traded by the bozos running the team who are too stupid to realize what you bring. The bad news is that the management is so erratic there is no guessing what they will do.

Wow. I guess I was wrong. Shawvita
did develop a rookie starting quarterback in the NFL. They must be really good after all. . . .

Yeah, what a s-show. The coach wrongly implied that he broke a team rule. The players and Reid seemed to imply that he disagreed (in a professional manner) with the coach, in front of the team. Is it a team rule that you can't disagree with a coach on a team that is 2-10?
https://www.chron.com/sports/texans/article/Texans-Justin-Reid-suspended-inactive-Ryan-Clark-16657013.php
Quote:He's a healthy scratch because of a disagreement," Clark said. "He's a healthy scratch because he answered a question honestly when asked by the coaching staff. Now, coaching staffs have disagreements with players all the time. They usually move on when it's not a fight, when it's not volatile. When it's amicable, they find a way to get to the solution for the problem and they field the best team they possibly can. That's what winning organizations do. The Houston Texans have decided to let ego, to let emotions, to let feelings get in the way of fielding the best team possible. Justin Reid was a professional and as a leader of the team he answered a question that was asked of him. Now, he won't suit up. This is one of the best players on the team. A player that's sacrificed much for the Houston Texans. Now, he's being repaid by not getting his helmet because he was honest.
Quote:"I thought the meeting went amicably and then I came to practice Friday and after practice was done, (Texans coach David Culley) called me into his office and said he benched me for disciplinary reasons," Reid told Fox 26. "It is what it is. I'm shocked that it happened and I'm just going to root for the guys out there and just keep cheering my teammates on. It's always tough when you're not playing. The best I can do is be there in spirit and root my guys on."
Next, they nominate him for NFL Man of the Year.

And they put out PR that makes him look like a saint, which he certainly seems to be!

At least it's a contract year for Reid and he can get the heck outta Dodge if he wants...

I was going to say “they will unless they are idiots”. But based on last couple years, they may be just that. Run the ball. A lot.

There are 31 other teams (okay, maybe more like 20-25) with competent talent evaluators that will snatch him up in a second as a quality backup if he lives long enough to get out of there.

Farm93 - 12-11-2021
Seems like their belief is that Mills is more representative of the direction they hope to take with their offense and QB in 2022. Therefore Davis will play for the rest of the season, as long as he stays healthy, because that allows them to run the type of system they plan to use in the future.
Then in the offseason the organization will try to find a starter and a back-up through the draft or free agency.
Maybe if Mills stays healthy they will keep him as the back-up in 2022, but at least with Mills they can assess if other players on the offense are a good fit for the style of offense they expect to use next year.
It feels like a tough assignment, but most QBs in colleges today would be thrilled to get to start a few games in the NFL to show what they can do beyond throwing balls at the combine.

needle - 12-11-2021
I've watched more Texans football this season than is normal/healthy.
a.) The offensive coaching staff is saddled with a porous offensive line but they are not incompetent
b.) When the O-line is overmatched, the coaching staff has shown a willingness to call almost exclusively quick-trigger pass plays or runs
c.) Mills has shown *just enough* ability to scramble around and evade rushers to give the coache some (over?) confidence that he won't get absolutely flattened multiple times per game
https://sports.yahoo.com/texans-oc-tim-kelly-says-234430784.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall
d.) Still, I believe this is bad news for Mills because he is still going to be sacked more than pretty much any other QB in the league (Houston 28th in sacks allowed, per TeamRankings.com) and it's just impossible to look good offensively when your offense also cannot run (31st in yards per ruch attempt)
e.) The Texans defense plays with surprising spirit and isn't an abolute embarassment like the offense has been many times this year. The coaching staff probably will all be brought back next year.
