Naomi Girma: 1st pick in NWSL draft - M T - 12-19-2021

Naomi Girma was taken first in the NWSL draft Saturday by the San Diego Wave FC.
Belle Briede was taken by the same team at the start of the 3rd round (#27)

GoStanford story:  "the Cardinal is the only program in the nation to have a player drafted in the top-five picks each of the last five seasons."

Any candidates to make it six years in a row next year?

No.

What is more impressive is Stanford has had the last four No. 1 picks: Andi Sullivan, Tierra Davidson, Sophia Smith, and now Girma. Imagine if Davidson, Macario and Smith all stayed at Stanford instead of turning pro early…

All of our top-5 drafted players were immediately obvious stars from the beginning. No one like that on the team now; maybe Avani Brandt is the closest -- turned into a solid defender.

I was pleased to see that both Mia Fishel (drafted) and Amanda Cromwell (coaching the San Diego Wave) have left UCLA and will trouble us no more.

In Tierna's year, we had 3 in the top 10, and would have had 4 if Alana Cook hadn't signed overseas.

Why is there no WNBA or NWSL team in the S.F. Bay Area?

It's a very bad look to me, and obviously a missed opportunity.

No.

I think Maya Doms has a chance to go top 5.

What about our goalie? Meyer not a candidate?

I love Katie, but only once has a GK been chosen in the top 10 of the draft, and that was Audrianna Franch at #6 in the very first draft in 2013 (and she's been on the national team). Jane Campbell, for reference, was drafted 15, and I think she was a better GK in college than Katie. One or two other GKs have been drafted in the teens.

certainly possible, but would need to have a monster year.
