Injury Update, Tuesday - washingtonismoney - 11-08-2011

Per Twitter (Stanford football, Kyle Bonagura):

Howell: definitely in.
Williamson: (quote from Shaw): "I feel really good" about his chances of playing.
Fleming--conflicting reports: Wilner (questionable), Bonagura "Cam Fleming is close to being about to play. Decision will come later in week."
Toilolo: in.

One more, Ertz doubtful according to Wilner.

Also, no surprise but Owusu is out.  They're still evaluating whether he should even come back this season.

Re: Injury Update, Tuesday - fullmetal - 11-08-2011

I wouldn't be surprised if he were out for the season (unless we beat Oregon and Oklahoma St. loses some time, in which case maybe Owusu comes back for the bowl game).  It's just the prudent thing to do, imho.  Up to the docs.

Nice Gemmell article that goes through all the injuries/statuses

Best news: Williamson, Howell, Toilolo all expected to play. Fleming questionable, which to me, means he will play since this is the biggest same of the season.

It says Ertz is doubtful, but he can be used in the possibility as a decoy in the triple tight end set.

Re: Injury Update, Tuesday - yvonne - 11-09-2011

How can anyone be a decoy if everyone knows the ball isn't going to him?

Re: Injury Update, Tuesday - Robbie - 11-09-2011

If it's a triple tight end set it's 'I'll send my big bodies against your big bodies - I bet we can move you in any direction we want' - no decoy involved. Just a lot of pushing and shoving. For which a healthy knee is vital.

While I basically agree that Ertz shouldn't be on the field if he has a bum knee, since so much of what one does on the field involves using those knees (drive blocking, cutting while running a routes, etc), I don't think Stanford always uses the three TE set as purely a power blocking formation.  I believe Toilolo's bomb in the Arizona game came out of a 3 TE set, in which the line sold that the play was a run while Ertz and Toilolo slipped past the linebackers and went deep.  Sometimes the offense also starts with 3 TEs tight, then splits one or more of them out away from the line, creating mismatches against much smaller DBs.  But, if I read you right, I think we agree on the overall point: Ertz won't be out there (or shouldn't be out there) unless he is healthy enough to contribute.
