limited fan attendance at athletic events - 82lsju - 01-04-2022

Quote:Policy Update (Jan. 4)

Stanford Athletics announced winter sports attendance policy changes due to additional COVID-19 safety precautions. Spectator attendance at all winter events taking place indoors will be temporarily reduced to a limited number of student-athlete family and guests. Spectators at outdoor events will be seated with social distancing and will be required to wear a mask.

These policy changes are effective immediately. Full spectator attendance for all events will resume as soon as appropriate, and will be communicated through Stanford Athletics' social media channels, direct emails to Season Ticket Members and on GoStanford.com/attendance.

For this to matter for basketball, they will have to start playing games again.

Will they play USC this week?

Heading to Safeway now to stock up on paper towels, toilet paper, pasta, and of course alcohol. Need to beat the rush. . . .

At least for now, outdoor events are still being held with fans in attendance. Was this Stanford driven or Santa Clara County driven?

From the email, it sounds to me like Stanford driven.

I can watch the games via streaming, but I will miss seeing Bobk.

With students not allowed to gather inside, it would be strange to allow fans.

I'm pissed off - seriously, can we overreact here in SC County more than we have over this entire pandemic?

Never mind.  Too political.  How about this:  I demand a pro rata refund of my season tickets for all home games where attendance is disallowed.  I mean, that should be a gimme, right?

(But given how desperate Stanford is for AD $$ - based on all the solicitations received lately (I scoff at them) - it wouldn't shock me if Stanford tries to horde the money).  Bernard, for once in you life, do the right thing.

sounds like that may be coming, from the linked article

Quote:Fans who have purchased a ticket to a Stanford Athletics event scheduled for 2022 will receive additional information about their purchase via email from athleticstickets@stanford.edu in the coming days.

I'd guess that email will offer a refund and/or the opportunity to donate your ticket...

Insist on a refund. With interest.

And why can’t they just say “A.D. Bernard...” Who are Jaquash and Kenmitzer anyway?

RE: limited fan attendance at athletic events - BobK - 01-04-2022

So much for our get to getting Friday at the Oregon game.
Sadly for some welfare for many and their health is important. I know money is more important right ? Geesh

Imagine, Stanford can sell a few thousand tickets to sporting events BUT the women's team ends up with 4 or 5 losses because of COVID-19 protocol misses.   In that scenario Stanford gets a 5 seed instead of a 1 seed.   Or worse, imagine Stanford gets stuck with COVID-19 protocol challenges in late February and therefore can't compete in the NCAA tournament.

Given's the WBB team's success last year, I am all for them not playing in front of crowds if that can increase their odds of a successful title defense.

I realize those things are not mutually exclusive, but I think the risk of COVID-19 protocol related losses in January is high enough that the AD should be allowed to do everything possible to keep the team eligible to play as the #1 seed is simply too valuable to risk for a less than a million in ticket revenue.

This logic COULD apply to MBB too, but we all know MBB isn't going to win in March so if not for Title IX issues I wouldn't care if the AD had fans in the stands for MBB.

FWIW - I am assuming everyone on the WBB team is vaccinated and would do OK should they get the Omicron variant of COVID.

Most of the other winter sports don't really have big crowds, so this decision really is about basketball.  The MBB team probably could benefit from a formal excuse for their poor attendance and the WBB that has a lot to lose if COVID-19 takes away a number of games or makes them ineligible for the tournament.

I suspect formally limiting attendance likely creates a bigger financial hit for the AD as a number of MBB fans will get refunds for games they were unlikely to attend given Omicron and the team's record.   So props to the AD for taking a more expensive route if this preemptive move allows the WBB to keep playing (and winning) in Santa Clara county.

In a county with 92% vax rate. In a Covid Omicron surge that has minimal impact on those who are vax'd, why not just require proof of vaccination and mask wearing? Telling everyone to stay home is not helping.

If Stanford hasn't noticed, it's impossible to contain Omicron because it spreads so easily. Denmark had plans to shut things down, but decided the scrap them because they knew the shutdowns would be more damage than the good gained from them.

SCC hospitals aren't being stretched to capacity.  Only unvax'd are getting really sick, and they are now being charged for Covid-related care expenses, so if they want to go bankrupt because they thought they had "natural immunity" or want their "free-dumb," then let them have it. Those who are vax'd, boosted, and masked should be allowed to live their lives, not be punished for the deeds of the irresponsible.

Weren't they two of the guys on the couch at the Omega house?

BTW, Safeway was packed. Already they were lamenting that paper towels were tough to get through the supply chain. . . .

Just did some looking... Dr. Cody's only restrictive orders to date with Omicron are that first responders be boosted. Even she isn't saying gatherings of certain sizes shouldn't be held. And Dr. Cody was I believe the first public health officer in the country to issue such an order in March of 2020.

RE: limited fan attendance at athletic events - BobK - 01-04-2022

Outsider. We fans have had to provide proof of vaccinated since the first of September for all sports. Indoors must wear masks

So people from off-campus could attend games but students would be banned? That would not make sense either.

RE: limited fan attendance at athletic events - cardcrimson - 01-04-2022

High School basketball games starting to be cancelled now as well. Apparently an outbreak has hit Heritage High, forcing them to cancel. More on the way, I'm sure. What a bummer for the kids.

At least Stanford teams are playing, so far. . . .

Men's basketball has lost 3 games so far and has been out since 12/25.

My point is, this should be enough. There is no reason to limit attendance with those measures in place. None. I mean the fact is Omicron isn't even as destructive for un-vax'd as Delta or other earlier Covid-19 versions. It just isn't. Stanford is effectively telling people to stay away because they might catch a cold.

Before Covid, plenty of people caught colds at Stanford events, yet they went on with impunity, without Stanford even thinking to limit attendance. If the Omicron Covid version presents as not much more than a cold for most people, and you've got vax and mask mandates, it seems Stanford is way overreacting to something that isn't the threat previous Covid surges were. If you want the public to take the real serious threats seriously, don't use your best NPIs when they aren't really needed. Even Dr. Cody seems to get this. Why not Stanford?

RE: limited fan attendance at athletic events - BobK - 01-04-2022

Several weeks ago Stanford announced students are allowed on campus abd they arrived now but on line classes for two weeks. Two weeks as of now

Just the facts please.
