Derek Mason out at Auburn -

Quote:Auburn defensive coordinator Derek Mason has stepped down from his position with the Tigers, the school announced on Saturday. Mason, 52, spent one year as a member of Bryan Harsin's staff after serving as the head coach at Vanderbilt from 2014-20. In his place, assistant head coach and linebackers coach Jeff Schmedding has been elevated to defensive coordinator.
"First and foremost, I want to thank Coach Mason for his leadership as our defensive coordinator this past season and wish nothing but the best for him on his next steps," Harsin said in a statement. "The decision to leave Auburn was not an easy one for him, and he will always be a part of the Auburn family.

Rumored to be heading to Oklahoma State to be their DC.

Nothing confirmed, but I read an article I think on 247sports.com that indicated he and the HC were not on the same page.

Four of the coaches that Harsin hired have already left after less than one year, there are lots of rumors of issues there.

Hope Mason lands well. It would be great to have him back as DC, but that's not going to happen.
In other news, Gary Patterson, ex HC at TCU, has joined Sarkisian's staff at Texas in a so-called "off-field assistant role". This appointment could make life uncomfortable for UT's current defensive coordinator, whose unit struggled mightily in 2021.

I'd love to see Mason come back as a co-DC with Lance, who needs to focus more time on recruiting as I recall others mentioning here. (That is, if Mason didn't burn any bridges on his way out, which I don't recall being the case.)

As I wrote above, he's almost certainly headed to Oklahoma State.

Mason had a guaranteed contract this year at Auburn for $1.5M. it will be interesting if Auburn bought him out before he was hired by Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State staff pay had not been in the Auburn neighborhood.

Would have loved to see Coach Mason back at Stanford! So there are no/zero/zip/nada coaching changes for Stanford??!!! Unbelievable and frankly, unacceptable. Status quo is not going to cut it and the "Home of Champions" should be better than this.

What does Stanford pay Anderson and Pritchard?

The implosion now taking place at Auburn provides some context for Mason's departure to Oklahoma State.

Perhaps Auburn can provide a grammar class to prepare the players for job interviews and resume writing in case they fail to make an NFL roster.
