RIP John Arrillaga - gailtate - 01-24-2022

Just a heads-up from someone who would know.

RE: John Arrillaga - BobK - 01-24-2022

Beyond sad if so. I know he couldn’t attend games when possible for fans.
Great Stanford basketball player

RE: John Arrillaga - chrisk - 01-24-2022

Just last Thursday, the City of Palo Alto announced that he is the previously anonymous donor of a new gymnasium for the city (funding $30M out of $40M total in exchange for control of the project).

What a truly amazing man. His legacy is boundless yet the story of his humble beginnings, his extraordinary accomplishments, and his sense of gratitude & service are even more amazing.

A well lived life. Rest in peace.

People like Arrillaga and Carnegie truly understood that wealth had been entrusted to them for the primary purpose of giving back to their communities.   All those so fortunate should take a lesson from them in this regard.  And from what I can gather, Arrillaga was a whole lot nicer than Carnegie.  Thank you Mr. Arrillaga, for all you have done for my alma mater and my town.    Your life has enriched my life.

RE: RIP John Arrillaga - crackpot - 01-25-2022

Laura's post was so beautiful. I'm grateful to this hero who has assisted so many to live their best life. It feels like a family member has passed, and I guess that makes sense because he has truly touched so many lives. And I suspect has touched so many quietly or anonymously.

I presume that Bobb and Phogge could say the same, but as a sixth-grader in Solano County I watched this guy play for Dallmar's team in 1958: KTVU, channel 2, Bud Foster doing play-by-play. Hell, Phogge could probably name the starting five.

RE: RIP John Arrillaga - BobK - 01-25-2022

We moved from Sacramento to Sunnyvale in early 1959 so only got to see John about 4-5 games. But so impressive. Watching John A was a pleasure and such a tough all out player made we realize what my coaches meant by be tough Bob
Had a nice conversation in the Hall of Fame room with John.
For those you don’t know he was a fixture at mbb WBB and WVB games

A life well lived, indeed. Could be "difficult", according to those in the know, but I say this: Stanford could use far more guys of JA's scope, caliber and insistence on results. I don't care how difficult these guys would be or how much broken glass they leave in their tracks.

I do remember Bub Bowling and John Windsor. Don’t know if Brockmeyer and Gerry Thuesen started.

Bub Bowling and Phil Kelly. Fremont HS of Sunnyvale

If you love Stanford sports, your life was touched by--made better by--Mr. Arrillaga. All of us here love Stanford sports. Therefore, . . . .

Thank you for what you did for us, including the many here (like me) who never met you.

More about John’s playing days

RE: RIP John Arrillaga - Mick - 01-28-2022

I met him at an SCU vs. Stanford game on the Santa Clara campus.  My father in law was a teammate of Mr. Arrillaga's for two years as an undergraduate.  Quite an amazing, extraordinary man.  Very nice man, too.

RE: RIP John Arrillaga - GoodGrief - 02-01-2022

I mailed him a note thanking him for all that he’s done for Stanford. A week later, I got a phone call and was greeted with, “This is John Arrillaga calling to thank you for a very classy letter!”

We chatted briefly and he told me, “always remember your alma mater,” and I told him that I do, just not quite in the same capacity as him. And he said, “well someday you will because you are going to be very rich!” Still waiting for that prediction to become true, but it was an honor to receive a call from The Godfather himself. May he Rest In Peace. So much of our Stanford experience would be different without him.
