WBB: Stanford 75 -- Arizona 69 -
81alum - 01-28-2022
Preview:
This game is billed as the second coming of the national championship game from last spring, and while we have lost Williams and Arizona has lost McDonald, the teams certainly know each other inside and out.
Arizona come to Maples ranked 8th by every poll. Arizona's best win was at the very beginning of the year against Louisville, but they have also beaten No. 22 Colorado. USC shocked Arizona and Oregon edged them in overtime, putting them at 15-2, 5-2 in conference.
Arizona is an excellent defensive team and a good offensive team. They hold opponents to 55 points and average 20 points off of turnovers, also averaging 11 steals per game. NOT turning the ball over will be crucial--they have the advantage on ball control.
Arizona's rebounding is fairly average--about the same as their opponents. We might have an advantage there.
The loss of McDonald has forced Arizona to diversity its offense, and it may make them harder to defend in a way. Cate Reese, their 6'2" senior forward from the Ogwumikes' vicinity is leading their scoring at 15 ppg. She is better from mid range and closer, but does hit 25% of her treys and she attempts them regularly.
5'8" senior guard Shaina Pellington is second in scoring at 10 ppg, and is hitting a whopping 49% of her shots overall.
6' forward Sam Thomas came back this year, and is hitting an astounding 49% of her treys--she has made 33 of them so far. This is a big step up from last year and her productivity is one of the ways Arizona has back-filled for McDonald.
Arizona also has a freshman guard Madison who comes off the bench to hit threes at a 39% clip, as well as Pueyo who "only" hits 37%. Combine those two with Sam Thomas and you can see why Arizona this year is a much better three point shooting team.
However, Arizona's strength is still its defense. If they keep the defensive intensity up, produce a lot of turnovers, and get hot from three point range--they could win this game. So our goal is the opposite of all that! We need to have an equally tough defense and bother their three point shots without giving up open lanes, and we need to hang onto the ball better than usual.
I will look forward to seeing a lot of you at the game!

Arizona is a different turkey compared to Colorado, Utah, Cal and ASU. They are Top 10 nationally (and briefly Top 4 nationally) for a reason.
Cate REESE is having a great season offensively, a very difficult player to guard, very physical.
Shaina PELLINGTON has been on an offensive tear lately, and has magnificently compensated for the loss of McDONALD.
Then, there's the resurgence of key transfer Koi LOVE, as she is finally starting to be offensively aggressive.
Arizona is dangerous, so Stanford better bring their A game tomorrow or else....

Once we gather there, we might consider shifting to another location, for example, on the raised section at the corner, may be a bit quieter there. Or other ideas?

I am not sure the logistics behind the Tara bobblehead giveaway but I would be happy to pay (far more than) the cost of a ticket to acquire one (and proudly display on my desk at the school in the northeast that has also has a decent women's basketball program). If anyone ends up with an extra or knows how to acquire one please let me know!

Same here. I have an east coast friend who would kill for one, but I don't want to give her mine.
I wonder if this bobblehead was originally intended as this year's STM gift? 3000 is an awful lot to give away (most giveaways in recent seasons have been to the first 500 or 1000 fans).
It is definitely the best bobblehead one could own.

Very pumped to watch the game today!
Looking forward to watching the bigs battle. Cate Reese is having a great season so far, averaging about 15 pts and 6 rebounds per game up from last year's 11 pts and 5 rebounds per game. However, last year she really struggled against our bigs. In the 3 games played, she averaged only 5 points and 3 rebounds. We are a very tough matchup for her and I don't see it changing much. Containing Reese and guarding Sam Thomas on the perimeter both seem very doable for our team. We check those boxes and I don't think Pellington, Yeaney, Ware, etc. can make up the difference. Doesn't bode well for the 'Cats today.

We lead 17-16 after one quarter as we found some early success with backdoor cuts and easy looks at the basket, but Arizona's defense tightened up late in the quarter.
Both Reese and Love picked up two fouls each so we need to take advantage of one of their best players on the bench

Deer ESPN,
We know you love the AZ bench and Reese. How about showing us more of the actual game?

We lead 17-16 after 1 quarter. Both teams shooting 50%. Reece sitting with 2 fouls. Brink has no fouls. We had only 3 turnovers in the 1st Q.
