Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - TheWildJacko - 01-31-2022

She nabbed Pac-12 POW again this week, her 2nd time receiving the honor in 3 weeks and 3rd this season. Haley Jones has 2 POW awards (in mid-Dec. and early Jan.), and no other player has more than one. UCLA is the only other team so far with 2 players receiving the award.

Haley may be flashier but Cameron is certainly making a case for the Pac-12's MOP.

RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - 2006alum - 01-31-2022

If the vote were today, I'd give it to Brink over Jones simply because in the games where it matters Brink has stepped up more (with the exception of Tennessee, where she mostly kept the bench warm in foul trouble). That said, one eye opening stat mentioned during the ASU game was that, as of last week, Jones was the top rebounder in the PAC-12. Given the number of large posts across the conference, it's interesting to me that a 6'1" G/F is out-rebounding them all.

Both Brink and Jones are on the just-released Wooden Award top 20

Me too. Haley also leads the league in turnovers. Ugh.

Sabally and Reese are also having nice seasons, but Cam is simply better than both of them. Assuming we win the conference, it should come down to Cam and Haley.

One thing that hurts Cam is that she's played less minutes compared to other players, so her total numbers aren't as high as they could be (e.g. points/game, rebounds/game, etc) and that does come into play when choosing POY honors. Tara has her system, but hardly any coach pulls a top player after 1 foul. That does hurt Cam's overall minutes because she might be able to play an extended period without picking up her second. The same goes after getting pulled after her second foul in the third quarter.

Cam should win it; and I expect she will.  That's no knock on Jones, just an observation that Cam is better as a post player than anyone else is vis a vis their counterparts.  Plus, Cam is a double-double machine, as I expect we'll see from here on out for most games.

My vote is also for Cam. Haley is so important to our team but does anyone think she's had a better season than last year? Her points per game, field goal percentage, 3 point percentage numbers are all down from last year. Her turnovers per game are up. It was mentioned by her that her focus in the offseason was on her outside shooting. I haven't seen any indication that has improved from last year. Her 3 point percentage is reflective of that; 16%.

Cam has been awesome and can be unstoppable when she stays focused and out of foul trouble. I just don't want anyone from Oregon to win the award. We need them to lose at AZ this weekend.

RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - jonnyss - 02-01-2022

i have no problem with cam being poy, but don't sleep on haley. she is at her best in crunch time. if i remember correctly, her 3pt % is up from last year's regular season. i don't think she hit a 3 until the tournament, where she was over 50%. also, tara seems to be training her to be a draymond greene point forward, standing at the top of the key directing the offense.  imo it's taking a while, but she's gradually improving. her high-low passes against az were amazing.

RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - spike5882 - 02-01-2022

I'd give it to Brink as well.  After this past game, her and Jones are equal in rebounds at 8.2, both leading the pac-12.  The only stats Haley has higher than Cameron is assists and turnovers (haley is 2nd in the pac in turnovers).  Cam leads Jones in scoring, blocks, steals, fg%.  At the moment, I think Cam would take it.

RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - oldalum - 02-01-2022

I'm enjoying the debate, but does it have to be either/or? How about co-Players of the Year? I'd bet opposing coaches are equally afraid of both of them going off against them!

RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - ca245 - 02-01-2022

To avoid angering the woofing gods by confining the POY discussion to Brink v. Jones, are there any players on other teams who have a reasonable chance to be named POY, keeping in mind there are still eight regularly scheduled games plus make-up games for each team?

Names that come to mind quickly -- Sherrard, Hollingshead, Osborne, Reese . . .  (Osborne is on the Wooden Award top 20 list along with Brink and Jones). I'd leave out the ORegon players on the grounds that they've missed too many games early in the season, but maybe they overcome that in the POY voting

RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - PVTree - 02-01-2022

My vote would be for Jones slightly over Brink. Jones can make things happen from anywhere on the floor. Brink needs to be in the paint (for me) to have confidence that she will make her shot. I do worry that Jones will turn it over, but if she gets to shoot, I expect the shot to go in from wherever she shoots.

As someone else said, at 6'1", she leads the conference in rebounding. As she said, she's high risk, high reward. I think she'll have a terrific 2nd half of conference play to get the conference POY.

I like the prediction of terrific 2nd half of conference play, then extend that to the Pac 12 tournament and the NCAA!

Just for grins, here are some comparative stats per 40 minutes, submitted without comment:

name      pts   reb  asst  to   stl  blk pf
Kiki      29.4  15.7  2.4   3.1  2.0  1.2 7.1
Cam       25.5  15.3  2.4   2.9  1.2  4.2 5.0
Haley     16.3  10.7  5.0   4.1  0.7  1.2 2.1

RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? - PVTree - 02-01-2022

Can you add fouls per 40 minutes? That seems like an important stat also.

Added above.  They draw a substantial distinction between Haley, Cam and Kiki -- and raises questions about Kiki's ability to stay on the floor -- a common problem for freshmen.

Let's see if I can make a readable table out of it:

Reminds me that Alanna Smith had foul issues early on (freshman PLUS being used to Intl ball).

Apologize for slight off-topic > Alanna leads her Adelaide team in Australia in scoring after 6 games - while averaging 4.5 fouls per game. Yes she has fouled out more than once.

The nightmare scenario is that they split the vote and a non-Stanford player comes in and wins PoY.

Here is a stat for you.  Stanford players have won the award 18 out of the 38 years it has been awarded, including seven years in a row between 2007/08 and 2013/14, but have not won it in the 9 years since then.
