WBB: Stanford 76 -- UCLA 48 -
81alum - 02-02-2022
Preview:
Our first meeting with UCLA is unusually on a Thursday and televised on ESPN.
UCLA has been limping along, sometimes with enough players to play and sometimes not. Earlier in the year they cancelled or postponed 5 in a row. On Friday they forfeited to Oregon, but on Sunday they came up with 8 healthy players to play at Oregon State, where they lost 72-58. In that game they had 4 players score in double digits, but Charisma Osborne did not play. She went down the previous week against Arizona with a non-contact knee injury, which usually bodes ill, but I have no information on if or when she is expected back.
UCLA is ranked 39 by Massey, which puts them in the range of Washington State and not far below Oregon State. They are 9-7, 4-4 in conference. Their best wins have been over Washington State and perhaps their two recent wins over USC. Earlier in the year they looked better, came within 10 of UConn and buried SJSU 112-33. In short, they have been riddled with injuries and illness and thus have been inconsistent. They might be pretty good if they get enough people back.
Leading them against Oregon State--their last game--was 5'9" redshirt freshman guard Dominique Onu, with 13. She enrolled early last season and got a 1/2 a season under her belt, so she is more experienced than it might seem, and seems to be playing well for UCLA. She went 3/6 from three point range and is hitting 46% of her treys on the year. Natalie Chou also had 13, Chantel Horvat was back and had 10, and 5'10" grad transfer Iimari Thomas also had 12. Onu, Chou, and Thomas basically played the whole game.
Most season stats are of questionable utility since we don't know who will show up. If Osborne can go it is a different team. Whether or not Osborne can go they have a post problem. Against Oregon State their tallest player was 6'2" guard Horvat.
I expect that we will try to pound the ball inside when we have the ball. They no longer have Onyenwere and they definitely could use 6'4" Bessoir back from injury. What on earth can they do against Brink? Maybe play zone and clog the paint? Those beautiful high-low lobs to Brink on the block would be virtually unstoppable if she can get position. If they can keep her out of the paint somehow, hopefully Jump will be back and hopefully Brink's three point shot on Sunday is a harbinger of things to come, and JVG could have another opportunity.
When UCLA has the ball they are going to have to hit a lot of mid range jumpers and treys. If they do then perhaps some lanes will open for them to drive on the basket, but that seems to be their only chance to get significant points in the paint.

Against Oregon State, UCLA had
18 offensive rebounds. They are still relentless on the offensive glass and that should be a major point of emphasis for Stanford. Also UCLA will try to pressure and trap Stanford so that they cannot make easy post entry passes.
I am planning to be at the game. Any other Cardboarders planning to be there?

Do they do well with O-boards by keeping most of their players around the basket and not getting back on defense? Normally, when you see a short, speedy team with a lot of o-boards they are vulnerable to fast break points on those occasions when they don't get the o-board.

Frankly I'd be tempted to rest Brink and start Fran instead who will match up well against (and perhaps even better handle) Thomas' physicality.

Was originally planning on going, but the variant messed up all of my in-between-games plans. Looking forward to your attendee's report.

I will be in attendance as well. It should be a game that we win comfortably. However, UCLA always plays us well it seems. Hoping to see us push often in transition and run on them as much as possible. They are short handed and not deep.

I hope that for games here in LA vs UCLA and USC, we get to see more of local girls Kiki IRIAFEN and Brooke DEMITRE,
since I think Stanford (at full strength) can build pretty comfortable leads at both venues by the end of the 3rd quarter.

Hear! Hear! Should definitely help UCLA's weak attendance.

For your reading pleasure, I recommend Warren Grimes' look at the team's January and its depth. It's on the right side of the Fast Break Club site,

Totally agree about Grimes' article. It's terrific!

At Pauley. I don’t see Haley Jones warming up with the rest of the team.
Also Osborne is dressed and warming up for UCLA.

No Haley Jones. Jump is with the team but reported she won't be playing tonight. Fran starting in Haley's place

This could be a big night for Belibi. She already has 4 points and 4 rebounds in 6 minutes.
We are deep into our bench already, still in the 1st Q.
Lexie is 3-3 from beyond the arc! We lead 22 to 14 after 1.

Just that she was out...so, not really.

We lead 22-14 after one quarter thanks to a hot start by Lexie, who's already made 3 three pointers in the first ten minutes.
Without Jones or Jump, we've dipped into the bench with JVG, Prechtel and Iriafen already seeing playing time.
Belibi has 6 points, but she could easily already be in double digits as she has missed a couple putbacks around the basket.
On defense, UCLA has 5 offensive rebounds already, but Owens and Osborne are a combined 1/10 so far.
