Men's BB: Stanford 87 -- UW 69 -
Papa John - 02-04-2022
After a disappointing performance vs WSU, the Stanford men will try to get back on track on Sunday afternoon at the expense of the Huskies. UW, after a horrendous start to their season, have improved to 12-8 (7-3) and are currently tied for fourth in the conference standings. Stanford, 13-8 (6-5), is still in seventh place, which seems like a familiar spot over the past few years. Sunday's game also marks the return of Daejon Davis to Maples. The Huskies are led by Terrell Brown, Jr., who torched Stanford for 25 points when the Huskies defeated the Cardinal in Seattle back on January 15.
I'm hoping that the extra day of rest will prove beneficial. Since going 9-21 in 3-pt FG vs USC, Stanford has gone a combined 13 of their last 66. Harrison Ingram had an especially poor showing versus WSU: in 31 minutes, he was 2-11 FG, 0-7 3-pt (!), 1-2 FT, 2 Off. Reb, 2 Def. Reb., 4 total Reb., 1 assist, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 2 TOs, 1 PF, and only 5 points.
At this point, the NCAA tournament is beyond the reach of this team. However, the NIT is still in play, especially given that Stanford still has winnable games left against Cal, Oregon State, Utah and ASU. On the other hand, it's not likely that Stanford will win vs UCLA, @ Oregon and @ Arizona.
ESPN's BPI gives Stanford a 77.4% probability of winning Sunday's game, so let's beat the Huskies!

It's going to take an upset of some substance at this point for me to reacquire an interest in MBB. Last night was an absolute must win if they wanted to have a shot at the big dance and they just didn't get it done.
Once again this year, Haase is struggling to translate a talent advantage into wins.

Then I probably shouldn't mention that, in conference play, UW is #1 in forcing turnovers...

I am underwhelmed by the "talent" of this team including the "talent" of the coach. There is hardly any talent at the PG position.

There is no "talent advantage."
Only 3 players on the whole team are 4* or better, and two of them are freshmen.
For some reason people think we are talented. We are not.

One of the unfortunate hallmarks of the entire Haase era is the whole is less than the sum of the parts.

Don't look now but we're up 9-0!

The good team showed up today. Up 10 with 4 min to play in the 1st. Ingram already has 11 points and we're shooting
67% 70% from 3.
Keefe finally took the high post shot, and made it!

Where has this team been hiding? We lead 61-46 with 11:56 to play. Ingram has 17 points and 9 rebounds. Delaire has 13 points and 6 rebounds. Jones 12 and Keefe 11.
Silva is a mistake machine.
Brown is nearly impossible to guard. His fall away mid-range jumper is money. He's got 22 points, but we lead by 15 with 9:26 to play.

From the audio: "Stanford's alertness on the offensive end - they're just making the right decision over and over again." Well... alright now.

Good win, but we let them end the game on a 10-0 run. I hoped for the 20+ point win, and it ended up 18.

We win 87-69. Might be the best basketball we've played all season.

Shooting 51% made up for the 20 turnovers. We'll need to be a lot less sloppy to beat UCLA.
(Yeah, I'm never satisfied)

3 of those were by the walk-ons in the final 2 minutes of the game. UW averages 17 TOs forced per game, best in the conference. This was a perfectly normal game TO-wise against that defense.

I still think this level of play is going to have us even with even with UCLA at best. UCLA will not allow all of those easy layups against the press. They play great man-to-man defense, which is our kryptonite.

I think this game shows us what a bad loss it was when we lost to UW in Seattle.
