What disciplinary action should Michigan take? My take: fire him. Some background.

Fire him.
Madison police: Seek an arrest warrant.

well, howard is trying to walk by when gard grabs his arm and gets in his face. doesn't excuse howard but imo offers some mitigation.

I just don't see how a firing is warranted. If he had done anything more than he did, yes, a firing would be warranted.
Regardless of anything that precipitated the altercation, Howard didn't make a fist to punch, and he didn't really slap the guy either. Most importantly, it was one swipe and that was it. If he had made a fist and punched and/or followed up by really going after the guy, firing would have already happened.
The Head Coach can't be physically going after people. Just can't happen, but given it was pretty benign, and Howard is not known for being a guy who can't control his temper or otherwise have these incidents, the behavior can be punished so he is held accountable and it can be used as a teaching moment, but I don't think a firing is warranted. Just suspend 5 games without pay and move on.

Hey, thanks for the insights. My guess is that Howard was trash talking at the WI coach.

He does have some history of anger control issues . . . this was just latest, and the only swipe/slap/punch/whatever.
The guy just didn't like his team getting schooled by Wisconsin, especially since Michigan is squarely on bubble and it could pop. But bottom line: he can't be leading young men with that kind of behavior. Suspension and fine for sure. Don't know about canning; don't really care. Only know that I will root against this guy until he shows some actual effing remorse for his inexcusable conduct.

Suspended for the remainder of the regular season. Would be very funny to see Michigan win all 5 games then immediately lose round 1 of the B10 tourney when he returns.

Also of note: 2 weeks ago, Michigan called a TO with less than a minute to go while up 16 on Indiana.
Also also of note: just over 1 week ago, Michigan called a TO with less than a minute to go while down 14 to Ohio State.

Actually, Howard has had prior issues with his temper and the opposing coach. And he most definitely slapped the assistant coach.
Still, they got it right suspending him the rest of the year.

Good talk, folks. Do you think the Big10+ or NCAA are likely to do anything?

apparently the Big 10 in conjunction with the schools...
Quote:Michigan men's basketball coach Juwan Howard has been suspended five games -- the remainder of the regular season -- and fined $40,000 for hitting Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft in the face after Sunday's game, the Big Ten Conference announced on Monday.
Wisconsin coach Greg Gard was fined $10,000 but not suspended, while Krabbenhoft is not expected to receive punishment.
Michigan forwards Terrance Williams and Moussa Diabate and Wisconsin guard Jahcobi Neath were each suspended one game. All three appeared to throw punches. The disciplinary actions were imposed by the Big Ten, in conjunction with both schools.

Seems about right to me.
Would add that if this sort of thing has happened before as other posters on this thread have intimated, he should be required to undergo an anger management course, and the consequences of another outburst should be made crystal clear to him.
